Despite speculation that the previous overload of Glee downloads would effect album release sales, Glee: The Music, Vol. 1, a collection of 17 songs featured on the TV show, officially debuted at #4 on the Billboard charts today.  The disk was released by Columbia Records last Wednesday, November 3.

Glee, the genre-defying new musical comedy series, follows an optimistic teacher who against all odds and a malicious cheerleading coach attempts to save McKinley High's Glee Club from obscurity while helping a group of aspiring underdogs realize their true star potential. Singles from the show, including renditions of some international classics such as Journey's Don't Stop Believin' and Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, have sold over a cumulative 1.8 million worth in downloads.

The disk features tracks including Kristin Chenoweth delivering Heart's "Alone" with series star Matthew Morrison and John Kander and Fred Ebb's "Maybe This Time" with co-star Lea Michele, as well as versions of Stephen Schwartz's "Defying Gravity," Journey's "Don't Stop Believin," Queen's "Somebody to Love," Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline," and Kanye West's "Gold Digger."

Glee stars Dianna Agron, Chris Colfer, Jessalyn Gilsig, Jane Lynch, Jayma Mays, Kevin McHale, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Matthew Morrison, Amber Riley, Mark Salling and Jenna Ushkowitz, GLEE is produced by Ryan Murphy Television in association with 20th Century FoxTelevision.
