Interview: Becca Kidwell Celebrates a Birthday Milestone at Don't Tell Mama
On May 4, the cabaret artist kicks off a special birthday with FIFTY WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR FORTIES
Cabaret artist Becca Kidwell is celebrating a milestone birthday in unforgettable fashion. On May 4, she marks turning 50 with the debut of her new cabaret show Fifty Ways to Leave Your Forties at Don't Tell Mama—an evening that also celebrates the release of her debut album What You Don't See, available on streaming platforms beginning May 1.
A BroadwayWorld Award winner and two-time MAC Award nominee, Kidwell has built a reputation for blending sharp wit, emotional honesty, and deeply personal storytelling in her cabaret performances. In Fifty Ways to Leave Your Forties, she reflects on surviving her own midlife crisis and emerging stronger, wiser, and more self-aware. The evening promises a mix of humor, catharsis, and heartfelt connection as Kidwell explores themes of reinvention, vulnerability, and resilience.
What You Don’t See expands on these themes through Kidwell’s original songwriting, showcasing her distinctive voice as both a performer and storyteller. In the live show, she premieres songs from the album alongside thoughtfully curated covers that deepen and enrich the emotional journey of the evening.

What are some of your biggest takeaways from your experience pursuing cabaret late in life?
“Late is a myth—especially in cabaret.”
This is an art form that rewards lived experience. The storytelling deepens, the perspective sharpens, and the connection becomes more immediate.
The other takeaway is that starting later means you don’t wait to be invited—you build it yourself. “You become the artist and the architect.” That’s challenging, but it also means the work is completely, unapologetically yours.
If you could say something to your younger self, what would you tell her?
“You’re not late—you’re right on time for the life you’re meant to live.”
I’d tell her to stop waiting for a map. There isn’t one. “The moment you start moving, you become the map.”
And I’d remind her to trust her instincts sooner—they were always pointing in the right direction.
How does it feel to be releasing your debut album?
“It feels like an arrival—and a beginning—happening at the same time.”
This album represents years of quiet persistence, so releasing it is both emotional and deeply grounding.
Doing it on my 50th birthday makes it even more meaningful. “It’s not ‘finally’—it’s ‘now watch this.’”
Can you tell me a little about what went into writing and crafting your new DTM show?
The show started with a question: “Where is the guidebook for midlife?”
When I couldn’t find one, I wrote one—through story and song.
It blends original music with carefully chosen covers to explore reinvention, humor, exhaustion, and truth. I’m very intentional about structure—“I don’t build a setlist, I build a journey.”
It’s funny, it’s honest, and it leaves room for things to be unresolved—because that’s where real life actually lives.
What’s next on the horizon for you?
Right now, it’s about sharing the album and this show as widely as possible.
Beyond that, I’m focused on expanding outside traditional cabaret spaces—new audiences, new venues, more songwriting.
“Once you start telling the truth on stage, it’s very hard to stop.” And I have more stories to tell.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
“You don’t miss your moment—you meet it when you’re ready.”
Starting at 40 and releasing a debut album at 50 wasn’t the original plan—but it turns out, it’s exactly right for who I am now.
