Flomenhaft Gallery Presents Neil Folberg's Serpent's Chronicle Runs Thru 4/24

By:

Neil Folberg's Serpent's Chronicle runs through April 24, 2010. Says the serpent: "No one sees me moving in the grass, though I see it all. 'A Tree Finer than All Others' spreads its roots toward the water that bubbles to the surface." Represented are thirty-five evocative photo works, every one printed on silk in the photographer's studio. Along with the poetic narrative written by Folberg, each photograph walks us through the Garden of Eden, from prior to the birth of Adam and Eve, to their creation and expulsion. Folberg has very successfully achieved the difficult task of creating a body of work that brings a biblical narrative into the present. His graceful models are from the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company and the images have a direct energy that leaves no one untouched. This is the serpent's visual record from that archetypal time until the present. All visitors report it is a most wonderful exhibit to behold.

This is a very limited review of the background of this amazing artist, Neil Folberg. His photographs of desert landscapes along with a text he wrote were collected in a book "In a Desert Land" by Abbeville Press in 1987. Aperture commissioned him to photograph synagogues of the world for a book, "And I Shall Dwell Among Them," published in 1995. "Celestial Nights," a series of landscapes set in the ancient ruins of the Middle East was published in 2002 and was the winner of the New York Book Show Prize. A complete set of these works is now owned by the Everson Museum, Syracuse University. In 2005, following in the footsteps of the Impressionists, he created photos that were the basis of a book by Abbeville Press, "Travels with Van Gogh and the Impressionists," that has had over 20 readings in museums such as the Phillips Gallery in Washington, DC, and other venues in the United States, also in Giverny and in the Auberge Sur L'Oise in France. Folberg's photographs have been shown throughout the United States and abroad.
