Adam Shankman's film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical ROCK OF AGES could have featured 50 SHADES star Jamie Dornan - had the audition gone better.

In a new interview with Variety, the model-turned-actor opened up about the less than ideal reading, saying:

"I had to sing 'Waiting for a Girl Like You.' It's nearly impossible to sing, and I've got quite a deep voice when I sing. My audition was at 10 in the morning on the Warner Bros. lot. I convinced myself it would be a good idea to have a bit of whiskey to relax my vocal cords and maybe as a bit of a confidence booster. Suddenly, I took a swig of Jameson and I instantly f-ing puked. So I'm standing with all these executives driving around in golf carts, as I'm vomiting on the lot. It was a bad look. I hadn't been clever enough to bring mouth wash. And then I had to go in, stinking of whisky and vomit and proceed to sing 'Waiting For a Girl Like You,' which I couldn't sing. It was the worst situation ever. Obviously, I didn't hear anything back."

With 50 SHADES OF GREY raking in over $81 million at the opening weekend box office, it all seems to have worked out for the best!

Dornan, who has modeled for Calvin Klein, Christian Dior and Armani, recently appeared on the big screen in Flying Home, and previously in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette.

ROCK OF AGES had its world premiere in January 2006 at The Vanguard Hollywood nightclub in Los Angeles, where it played a six-week engagement before opening a limited run at The Flamingo in Las Vegas in May 2006. The musical made its New York debut in October 2008 at Off-Broadway's New World Stages, playing 110 performances before transferring to Broadway and opening to widespread critical acclaim at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. The musical moved to the Helen Hayes Theatre, on March 24, 2011. In 2012, ROCK OF AGES recouped its capitalization of $7.25 million, in addition to all costs incurred during the show's move from the Brooks Atkinson Theatre to the Helen Hayes Theatre. The smash hit musical has grossed over $125 million on Broadway alone, where it has been seen by nearly 1.5 million people, and broken the Box Office Record at the Helen Hayes Theatre ten times. It played its final performance on January 18, 2015 after 22 preview and 2,328 Broadway performances, solidifying its spot as the 27th longest running show in Broadway history.

In addition to being a bona fide hit on Broadway, ROCK OF AGES is currently rocking the Las Vegas Strip at The Venetian Resort; the open seas on Norwegian's cruise ship The Breakaway; and the open road on its third U.S. National Tour and first U.K. National Tour. The show was also a runaway success in Toronto, Australia, and London's West End, and has licensed productions in several additional countries, including Mexico, Sweden, Korea, Japan and The Philippines. In 2012, ROCK OF AGES hit the silver screen as a major motion picture starring Tom Cruise.
