EDINBURGH 2026: Review: BOILER ROOM SIX: A TITANIC STORY, Pleasance
Boiler Room Six: A Titanic Story runs at Edfringe until 31 August
Following two sellout Fringe runs, the one-man play Boiler Room Six: A Titanic Story returns to Edinburgh. Written, directed and produced by Tom Foreman it stars Charlie Sheepshanks as Titanic stoker and survivor Frederick Barrett.
It’s an incredibly atmospheric play thanks in part to the lighting. The red light beams down on the audience and makes you feel like you’re in the furnaces of the ship.
Fred’s account gives you a fascinating insight into the world of the workers on board the Titanic. We begin with him being interviewed about what he recalls about the April 14th disaster. He then takes us through who else was working with him, including a young man who snuck on board and lied about his age and experience in the hope of work.
It’s definitely a different story to the one we’re used to hearing of the wealthier passengers. There’s a particularly poignant scene where the ship goes down halfway through their voyage and Fred sees the grandeur of the Titanic for the very first time.
Sheepshanks' performance is electrifying and his words are so descriptive. He’s a very physical performer and takes us on a whirlwind 55-minute adventure. The intimacy of the room also plays a part in how captivating this show is. You really see the terror on Fred’s face as he realises what is happening.
Boiler Room Six: A Titanic Story is a thrilling piece of theatre with an outstanding performance from Charlie Sheepshanks.
