Dublin Theatre Festival 2017 and More This Week at The New Theatre

Dublin Theatre Festival kicks off tomorrow at The New Theatre with 'Playboyz' by Martin Sharry. Playboyz is a re-imagining of JM Synge's Playboy of the Western World. Synge says 'on the stage there must be joy, and there must be reality'. The Irish mix of the craic and the tragic continues but breaks from authority and tradition. This is a play about seeking asylum. It is a play about Irishness. It stays true to the wild spirit of the original, in its questioning of the whole idea of transformation. Next week, CLASS by Iseult Golden and David Horan will be on The New Theatre stage. With humour and insight, CLASS explores the complications and comedy when three adults find themselves back in class.

About the Show:
Patrick wants to live and work in Ireland but he is African. He lands in a bar in the west and is offered a trial run - it is St. Patrick's Day after all. Patrick's survival depends upon the imagination of the locals. Eventually, the drama gives way to something more surreal. The characters fade and the author's relationship with his own father (who is dead) demands attention. Only then is integration possible and people are seen as people, hopefully.

Brian and Donna's son is nine years old, and he's struggling. That's what his teacher says. Says he should see a psychologist. But Brian and Donna - recently separated - never liked school, never liked teachers. So are they going to trust this one? And should they?

A parent-teacher meeting goes very, very wrong in CLASS - a new play about learning difficulties: in school, in life, wherever. Created by theatre artists and screenwriting duo, Iseult Golden and David Horan, CLASSexplores the complications and comedy when three adults find themselves back in class.

About the Show:
67 Words by Donal O'Kelly marks the centenary of the 67-word Balfour Declaration 2nd November 1917. The declaration granted British government support to the Zionist aim of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine.

Fifty years on, in June 1967 an altarboy in Dublin keeps the thurible lit in the Corpus Christi procession, as Israeli forces displace half a million Palestinians, and Balfour rumbles from his old Dublin bed.

When Irish Secretary in the late 1880s, Arthur Balfour criminalised the act of boycott and sanctioned collective punishment of "bad" areas, measures now used by Israel against Palestinians.

About the author
Donal O'Kelly is a playwright and actor. Previous solo plays include Edinburgh Fringe First winners Catalpa and Fionnuala, also Hairy Jaysus, Jimmy Joyced! and Bat The Father Rabbit The Son. Other plays include The Memory Stick, Little Thing Big Thing, The Cambria, and Asylum! Asylum! and The Dogs. Recent acting roles include Jimmy's Hall and Katie Roche in the Abbey Theatre.
