According to Deadline, David Mamet's 1988 Tony-nominated, Hollywood-centered play SPEED-THE-PLOW will soon appear on the big screen. Mamet is adapting the project, with Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films, Winkler Films and The Fyzz Facility producing.

Irwin Winkler said in a statement: "I am delighted to be working with David Mamet on his insightful exploration of the characters he created in his play which is a classic expose of ambition in Hollywood. Mamet is a master at presenting timeless moral quandaries and audiences can look forward to a unique examination of the cost of doing business -- both in movies and in life."

Randall Emmett commented, "Mamet's play is iconic and as relevant today as it was when it first hit Broadway. We are excited to be able to work with Mamet and Winkler and bring this film to the cinema."

SPEED-THE-PLOW premiered on Broadway in 1988 starring Joe Mantegna, Ron Silver and Madonna. Silver won the Tony that year for Best Actor in a Play. The work returned in 2009 with Norbert Leo Butz (stepping in for Jeremy Piven after he departed due to medical issues), Raul Esparza and Elisabeth Moss. Alicia Silverstone appeared in a 2006 production in Los Angeles, and Lindsay Lohan starred opposite Nigel Lindsay and Richard Schiff in last year's West End run.

Mamet's films WAG THE DOG and STATE AND MAIN revisit the themes he introduced in SPEED-THE-PLOW. Among his other screenwriting credits are THE VERDICT, THE UNTOUCHABLES, HANNIBAL and HOFFA, as well as GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, which was adapted from his 1984 Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Mamet is an iconic American playwright, having written THE DUCK VARIATIONS, SEXUAL PERVERSITY IN CHICAGO, AMERICAN BUFFALO, RACE, THE ANARCHIST and more.
