The new Cleve Carney Art Gallery presents the opening preview of its inaugural exhibition,"Selection of Artworks from the Cleve Carney Collection," Thursday, Feb. 6 from noon - 2 p.m. at the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) located at 425 Fawell Blvd. on the campus of the College of DuPage (COD) in Glen Ellyn. This event is free and open to the public. The exhibition will be on display through March 29, 2014.
Carney, who passed away in July 2013, bequeathed 40 percent of his contemporary art collection, comprised of paintings, sculpture, and digital media to COD with the intent that these works be added to the college's permanent art collection and displayed throughout the Glen Ellyn campus, as well as in the new Cleve Carney Art Gallery, recently constructed as part of the 14-month, $35 million MAC renovations.
Throughout his lifetime, Carney amassed an impressive art collection of works by Chicago Imagists and included abstract, representational, post-minimalist and conceptual art. "I was fortunate to have the opportunity to have Cleve as my brother and I greatly enjoyed watching Cleve's enthusiasm for collecting," says Cleve's brother Rick. "So it gives me great pleasure to know that the Cleve Carney Art Gallery will make it possible for others to enjoy works from his collection and experience Cleve's love of visual art."
The inaugural exhibition,"Selection of Artworks from the Cleve Carney Collection," will feature select works from the late Cleve Carney's extensive contemporary art collection, that includes paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, photography, and digital media by Mel Bochner, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Cat Chow, Julia Fish, John Fraser, Pia Fries, Leon Golub, Arturo Hererra, Jenny Holzer, Markus Linnenbrink, Judy Ledgerwood, Robert Motherwell, Jim Nutt, Catherine Opie, Roxy Paine, John Phillips, John Pittman, Karen Reimer, Aurora Robson, David Shrigley, Ann Wilson, Zhou Brothers and many more.
"Selection of Artworks from the Cleve Carney Collection" is curated by Barbara Wiesen, Director and Curator of the Cleve Carney Art Gallery and COD's Permanent Art Collection. "Cleve Carney was passionate about the arts and an avid supporter and collector of contemporary work by local, as well as national and international artists," says Wiesen. "He had an appetite and inquisitiveness for new art that continued to broaden the scope of his collection up until the end of his life."
Designed by Wight & Company, the newly constructed 1,850 square-foot Cleve Carney Art Gallery features high ceilings and bamboo floors and an outdoor courtyard. "It's perfect that the Cleve Carney Art Gallery bears Cleve's name," says Carney's long-time friend Mark Wight of Wight & Company. "It will display Cleve's art beautifully and at night it's going to be a beacon. What better place to showcase emerging artists than at a college like the College of DuPage connected to a premier performing arts and educational facility such as the newly renovated MAC."
The Feb. 6 preview of "Selection of Artworks from the Cleve Carney Collection," precedes the official public dedication of the gallery on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. Admission to the dedication of the Cleve Carney Art GallerySunday, Feb., 16 at 3 p.m. is free and open to the public. . Post-opening gallery hours for the exhibition will be Monday throughThursday 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.; Thursday 6 - 8 p.m.; and Saturday 11a.m. - 3 p.m. The gallery will also be open beginning one hour prior to MAC performances and during intermission.
The inaugural exhibition of the Cleve Carney Art Gallery is made possible in part by a gift from DuPage County native and Glen Ellyn resident Cleve Carney who provided a seven-figure gift to the College of DuPage Foundation in 2012 to create an arts legacy for the community. In conjunction with the Cleve Carney legacy gift, the College of DuPage Foundation has launched a three-year campaign to ensure Carney's generous gift is fully realized. McAninch Arts Center (MAC) on the campus of College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn, Ill. is located 25 miles west of Chicago near I-88 and I-355 and houses three performance spaces (the 800-seat proscenium Performance Hall, previously known as the Mainstage; the 184-seat soft-thrust Playhouse Theatre, formerly called Theatre 2; and the versatile 70-seat black box Studio Theatre), plus the new Cleve Carney Art Gallery, classrooms for the college's academic programming and the 1,200 capacity outdoor Patio Stage. This unique facility has presented theater, music, dance and visual art to more than 1.5 million people since its opening in 1986 and typically welcomes more than 50,000 patrons annually, from the greater Chicago area.
The MAC began renovations in fall 2012 to update its three performance spaces, construct a new art gallery and outdoor patio stage, and make improvements to the infrastructure, teaching and learning spaces and patron service areas. The MAC completed its 14-month $35 million renovation in December 2013 and officially opens its doors to the public with a series of 2014 Grand Opening Events, culminating with the MAC Madness Celebration on March 8. The MAC renovation was funded as part of the $168 million referendum that voters of District 502 passed in November 2010.
