According to The New York Post's Michael Riedel, a revival of Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee's classic play Inherit the Wind will soon be blowing into Broadway.

Centering on the still-controversial issue of evolution vs. intelligent design, the 1955 courtroom drama is based on the Scopes "monkey trial" that rocked the nation in the '20s.  Scott Ellis (Twelve Angry Men) is slated to direct, and Tony Award-winner Christopher Plummer (King Lear, Barrymore) will star as Matthew Harrison Brady, the zealous lawyer who doesn't believe in Darwinism and who attacks fellow attorney Henry Drummond--who does.

The production "has yet to find a Broadway theater, but production insiders are confident they'll have a home in the fall, when weaker shows are likely to pack it in," writes Riedel.

Inherit the Wind opened at The National Theatre on April 21st, 1955, and ran for 806 performances.  The original production starred Paul Muni, Ed Begley, Tony Randall and more.  A 1996 revival starred George C. Scott (who quit during the run of the production due to poor health) and Charles Durning.  The classic 1960 film version, directed by Stanley Kramer, starred Spencer Tracy, FredEric March and Gene Kelly.
