Carnegie Hall Community and Family Programs Announced for May and June

Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute (WMI) concludes its 2012-2013 season with outstanding live performances in community venues throughout the five boroughs of New York City with its free Neighborhood Concerts. For almost four decades, the Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concerts have featured free performances by top artists across multiple genres of music, including classical, jazz, and world music. In addition, WMI presents a number of free family-friendly programs throughout New York City as part of McGraw-Hill Carnegie Kids.

At Carnegie Hall, parents and young people can enjoy affordably-priced Family Concerts, recommended for ages 5-10, providing a unique opportunity to introduce children to live performances of music from around the world. Pre-concert activities will take place one hour before each performance and are free to all ticket holders.

Carnegie Hall FAMILY CONCERT: THE WIYOS
Sunday, May 5 at 1:00 p.m.
Zankel Hall

Capturing the vintage spirit of the '20s and '30s with an array of colorful instruments-harmonica, washboard, kazoo, string bass, and guitar-this band fills the stage with rich textures and sounds. Bursting with energy and charisma, The Wiyos invite kids and adults alike to holler, stomp, and sing along to old-time American folk music.

NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERT: BROOKLYN RIDER
Sunday, May 5 at 3:00 p.m.
Abrons Arts Center at Henry Street Settlement

The young men of Brooklyn Rider are revolutionizing the staid image of the traditional string quartet with a surprisingly simple approach: treat all music, old or new, as fresh compositions. The high-energy group's sense of adventure, surprise, and fun in performance "demystifies contemporary classical music and invites everyone into the tent", according to Time Out New York.

MCGRAW-HILL CARNEGIE KIDS: SHINE AND THE MOONBEAMS

Family music's first soul band Shine and the Moonbeams captures the fun, sweetness, and simplicity of youth in a groovy R&B package. With compassionate verses on important subject matter such as standing up to bullies, and celebrating individuality, kids and adults will identify with Shine's insightful lyrics and soulful melodies.

ClassNotes transforms everyday classical music into a wild rollercoaster of colorful sounds and emotions. Get on board as these young, charismatic teaching musicians take you and your kids on a full-throttle ride of extraordinary discovery through active listening and storytelling. The ClassNotes members are all top performers who play with the world's best orchestras, and are winners of international competitions and distinguished awards.

MCGRAW-HILL CARNEGIE KIDS: THE ITTY BIDDIES

The Itty Biddies are a trio of sweet songstresses that take audiences on a journey of imagination through story and song, from an African safari to the big skies of Texas and back on the subway in New York City. The Itty Biddies soaring vocals, joyful ukulele, and groovy bass has been called "the smoothest 45 minutes in kiddie concert history" by Time Out New York Kids, and will have both adults and kids singing and dancing all the way home.

NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERT: CLAUDIA ACUÑA
Saturday, June 1 at 5:00 p.m.
Brooklyn Museum

Chilean singer-songwriter Claudia Acuña sings mainly in Spanish, but her soulful, crooning alto transcends all language barriers with its powerful sense of freedom and heartfelt emotion. Born in Santiago, Chile, this cognac-voiced siren lives in New York City but remains fiercely committed to her rich heritage. A real success story, Acuña worked the coat check at the Blue Note for almost a decade before headlining the bill at the famed jazz venue.

MCGRAW-HILL CARNEGIE KIDS: ELIZABETH MITCHELL AND YOU ARE MY FLOWER

ELIZABETH MITCHELL, the first children's music artist signed to the Smithsonian Folkways label in this century, channels the music of rock legends from Woody Guthrie to the Velvet UndergrounD. Mitchell's indie-folk style appeals to the entire family-fitting, since she performs with her husband Daniel Littleton and daughter Storey, along with a colorful gang of musical friends.

NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERT: SON DE MADRE
Friday, June 21 at 6:00 p.m.
Jacobi Medical Center

Latin band Son de Madre fires up the stage with its Cuban music infused with jazz, funk, and Brazilian flavors. With musicians from Cuba, Argentina, Israel, Puerto Rico, and the US, the band mixes music from across the world to make one sound that'll have you dancing all night long.
