Irene is among only a small handful of disasters powerful enough to bring Broadway to a close.  There was, of course, September 11, 2001, followed by the blackout of 2003 and then the Stagehand Union strike in 2007.  This past weekend, all Broadway shows were cancelled in anticipation of the dangerous weather and in response to the shut down of the NYC mass transit system.

Broadway had been projected to lose in the neighborhood of $8-10 million in refunds and additional sales as a result. The shut down was especially crippling, as weekends are typically shows' most lucrative performance period.  The Broadway League has just released the final numbers, and indeed, each show took a significant financial hit, with the cumulative loss tallying in at approximately $8 million.
