Broadway Advocacy Coalition Announces First Quarterly Community Gathering

Broadway Advocacy Coalition announces its first quarterly Community Gathering, to be held on April 1st, 2019 at 7:00pm in the lobby of Signature Theater.

This new quarterly event will bring together like minded artists, students, and activists interested in using art and storytelling in their social justice work. Each Community Gathering will focus on a different question, spotlighting artists and organizations grappling with that question in their work and providing opportunities to build collaborations.

The upcoming evening will feature performances by Mykal Kilgore (Songs for A New World, Motown), Aisha Jackson (Frozen, Waitress) and an original piece created and performed by actor/writer Alexandra Kumala Moerdomo (A Modest Proposal) and Columbia Law Students Nestor Almeida, Joshua Teng and Ivy Yao. Also featured will be conversations with Tony-nominated director Leigh Silverman (Violet, Chinglish, In the Wake) as well as Angelica Lara, a community organizer for the Bronx Defenders: an innovative and holistic non profit focused on justice for immigrants and low income people in the Bronx. The focus of this event is Responsible Storytelling: How both artists and advocates can work with directly impacted individuals, particularly in the areas of immigration and criminal justice, without flattening or manipulating their stories. The event will be hosted and moderated by BAC President Britton Smith, Artistic Director Ben Wexler and Creative Director Zhailon Levingston.

The Broadway Advocacy Coalition is a group of Broadway artists committed to building the capacity of advocates, students, artists, organizations and communities to use the arts as an integral part of their social change work. Past projects have included collaborations with the Alliance for Quality Education, New York City Council, the Center for Popular Democracy and artists like India Arie, Audra McDonald, Brandon Victor Dixon and more.
