Guild Hall's Academy of the Arts was formed in 1985. The membership has grown to over 200, a truly incredible assemblage of internationally recognized artists emanating from a relatively small community. Over the past two decades the Academy has honored both summer and year-round eastern Long Island residents who have demonstrated excellence in the visual, literary, and performing arts. Award recipients are selected by ballot by the entire Academy membership each year. Past recipients include Mel Brooks, Steven Spielberg, Billy Joel, Elaine Stritch, Gwen Verdon, Alec Baldwin, Julian Schnabel, William de Kooning Roy Lichenstein, April Gornik, Chuck Close, Joe Pintauro and Peter Jennings, to name a few.

Guild Hall, located in East Hampton, NY, is the first center in the United States to provide a museum, theater and community meeting place under one roof. Since 1931, Guild Hall has engaged the community in cultural events that embrace all the arts and has been a home to the artistic community. Guild Hall's intimate galleries showcase emerging and contemporary artists who have lived and worked in the region including some of the world's most celebrated painters, sculptors, photographers and graphic artists. The John Drew Theater, which offers music, readings, plays, films and dance year round, recently received a complete renovation. Funds raised from the Awards dinner benefit Guild Hall's mission of celebrating the artistic spirit in eastern Long Island by informing, inspiring and enriching diverse audiences with excellent and engaging year-round programming.
