Apply for a 2016 Residency at SPACE on Ryder Farm; Deadline Jan 15

By:

SPACE on Ryder Farm - a one-of-a-kind residency program for artists and innovators housed on the oldest operating farm in Putnam County - has opened their application process for the 2016 season as of today, November 9th, 2015. The deadline for submissions is Friday, January 15th, 2016.

Writers, theatre makers, visual artists, musicians, dancers and artists of other disciplines as well as innovators are encouraged to apply. Residencies range from one to two weeks. Residents are provided housing, meals, artistic support and access to 130 acres of organic farmland. Applications are also open for company retreats and SPACE's resident playwrights' group, The Working Farm. This group gathers each season for a three-to-five week residency divided into multiple stays.

The Working Farm playwrights for the 2015 season were: Heidi Armbruster (Alice in Dairyland), Robert Askins (Hand To God), Jeff Augustin (Little Children Dream of God), Clare Barron (You Got Older), David Cale (Lillian), Samuel D. Hunter (The Whale) and Boo Killebrew (The Play About My Dad).

Led by founding Executive Director Emily Ryder Simoness, SPACE on Ryder Farm provides artists the opportunity to create away from the stress and noise of everyday life and work in the company of other artists in a bucolic and inspirational setting. Ryder Farm has been in the Ryder family since 1795 and was at the cutting-edge of America's green movement by becoming one of the first farms in the country to go organic in the 1970s. All of SPACE's programming is centered around residents gathering together for three farm fresh meals a day.

SPACE on Ryder Farm creates an environment singular in its ability to invigorate artists and innovators and their work, and contributes to the sustainability and resourceful preservation of one of the oldest organic family farms on the East Coast. In five seasons' time, SPACE has hosted over 650 artists, fostering new work from some of the nation's most exciting artists including playwrights Young Jean Lee, Adam Rapp, Daisy Foote, Halley Feiffer, Anne Washburn, Mfoniso Udofia and Lucas Hnath. Theater companies SPACE has hosted are Woolly Mammoth, Paines Plough, Waterwell, Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Mad Ones, Transport Group and Fiasco Theater Company. Residents working in other disciplines have included musicians Shaina Taub and Cesar Alvarez, dance company Monica Bill Barnes & Company, visual artist Alta Buden and photography roundtable RLK photo. SPACE on Ryder Farm also also annually hosts the Creative Solutions Symposium. Previous participants include James Lecesne (TREVOR project) and Dana Edell (SPARKMovement). Applications for the Symposium will open January 1, 2016 and will be due March 1, 2016.
