The Tony Randall Theatrical Fund continues last year's mandate of providing operating support to assist outstanding theatre companies meet the challenges of the current economic climate. Grants were awarded to several deserving companies.

"We hope these grants will help to keep these wonderful organizations sustainable over the next fiscal year and we look forward to many exhilarating nights at the theatre!"
Heather Randall

Playwrights Horizons, The Wooster Group, St. Ann's Warehouse, and PS 122 are being recognized for sustained artistic excellence and for developing and presenting new and exciting artists and theatrical works.

The Fund also awarded grants to the young theatre companies New Georges and Pig Iron Ensemble in recognition of their groundbreaking experimental work. Pregones Theatre is being honored this year for its commitment to providing popular, affordable arts programming in the Puerto Rican and Latino communities in the Bronx.

The Classical Theatre Of Harlem under the new leadership of Ty Jones, Producing Director, has also been awarded a Tony Randall Grant for its commitment to serving the Harlem community as a cultural destination for the last decade and for providing opportunities for remarkable actors of color to play great classic roles which would otherwise be scarce.

In addition to Philadelphia's Pig Iron, the Tony Randall Theatrical Fund provided additional support to theaters beyond the limits of New York City, by awarding grants to New Jersey's McCarter Theatre Center and Connecticut's EuGene O'Neill Theater Center for their long devotion to developing works and artists outside the city's spotlight.

An additional grant has been made by the National Actors Theatre Foundation, also administered by Mrs. Randall, for the production of Lincoln Center Theater's A FREE MAN OF COLOR by John Guare and directed by George C. Wolfe. A FREE MAN OF COLOR is a freewheeling epic set in 1801 New Orleans. Jacques Cornet, the title character, is a new world Don Juan and the wealthiest inhabitant of this sexually charged and racially progressive city. Jacques thinks all is well in his paradise until history intervenes, setting off a chain of events which no one, much less this free man of color, realizes is about to splinter the world.

"A FREE MAN OF COLOR is one of the most exhilarating, sexy new plays in years. We are honored to be working with the immense talents of Mr. Guare and Mr. Wolfe. FREE MAN is the kind of play that comes along once in a decade and it deserves the kind of production that Lincoln Center Theater can deliver. We are especially thrilled that over 20 actors from the New York community will be employed for this production." Heather Randall
