Good Night, and Good Luck and Othello play their final performances today, June 8, 2025.
Today, June 8, 2025, Broadway says goodbye to two limited run productions. Good Night, and Good Luck takes its final bow at the Winter Garden Theatre following 22 previews and 77 regular performances; and Othello will conclude its limited run at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre following 30 previews and 89 regular performances.
The Winter Garden will soon be home to Mamma Mia! and the Barrymore does not yet have a new tenant.
Good Night, and Good Luck received 5 Tony Award nominations, including Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for George Clooney. The play, adapted from the 2005 film co-written and directed by Clooney, dramatizes television journalist Edward R. Murrow’s historic clash with Senator Joseph McCarthy during the Red Scare. It began performances on Broadway in March.
In Good Night, and Good Luck, we tune in to the golden age of broadcast journalism and Edward R. Murrow's legendary, history-altering, on-air showdown with Senator Joseph McCarthy. As McCarthyism casts a shadow over America, Murrow and his news team choose to confront the growing tide of paranoia and propaganda, even if it means turning the federal government and a worried nation against them. The play chronicles a time in American history when truth and journalistic integrity stood up to fearmongering and disinformation—and won.
Good Night, and Good Luck was just broadcast live on CNN. This was a historic Broadway first as never before had a live performance of a play ever been televised on CNN.
The new Broadway production of Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal under the direction of Kenny Leon, recouped its initial investment after just nine weeks on Broadway. Having opened at the Barrymore Theatre on Sunday, March 23, the limited engagement played to sold-out audiences at every single performance since its very first preview on Monday, February 24. Last month, it broke the weekly record for top-grossing play in Broadway history. It is now, officially, the highest grossing play revival in world history.
It also stars Molly Osborne as ‘Desdemona’, Tony Award winner Andrew Burnap as ‘Cassio’, Anthony Michael Lopez as ‘Roderigo’, Daniel Pearce as ‘Brabantio’, and Kimber Elayne Sprawl as ‘Emilia’. The cast also features Neal Bledsoe as ‘The Duke of Venice’, Julee Cerda as ‘Bianca’, Ezra Knight as ‘Montano’, Gene Gillette as ‘Gratiano’, Rob Heaps as ‘Lodovico’, ensemble members William Connell, Ty Fanning, Ben Graney, Abiola Obatolu, Daniel Reece, Christina Sajous, Sarah Thorn, and Greg Wood.
