The antique barge that houses the Waterfront Museum will travel by tugboat to Tribeca's Hudson River Park Pier 25 for two weekends of fun maritime activity in May. Featured will be free open barge tours, a Pirate Show, a teen comic book launch, folk music, school visits and two "tug & barge" fundraiser cruises. 

Weekends, May 5, 6 and 13 from 1-5pm and Thursday, May 10 from 4-8pm

Open Barge Tours – The public is invited to come see the only surviving wooden example of a Hudson River barge that remains afloat and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.. Enjoy free visits or entertainment May 3-15. Kids love the popular George Rhoads audio kinetic ball machine sculpture and the many barge models, bells and artifacts. Discover how goods were transported before there were bridges and tunnels and learn why New York City's waterfront became obsolete due to the container trucking industry. The Barge's wall feature "LIFE ON THE WATER" – oil paintings by Odd Andersen. Talk & Show on May 5,6,13 by Captain David Sharps at 2 & 4 pm. MELA, a folk band will play original tunes on May 5 at 1 & 3 pm. Free, donations appreciated. 

 

Saturday, May 12 shows at 1 and 4pm

"PIRATE SCHOOL!" – a swashbuckling one-man family show by veteran New York physical comedian and actor David Engel, aka "Billy Bones, the good pirate". Advance Tickets $13 adults, Kids 12 and under $10 available at www.waterfrontmuseum.org.

 

Friday, May 11 from 7-10pm

Teen Book Launch – Cast off with a children's book launch for Teen Boat!. Reading and signing with New York Times bestselling author Dave Roman and illustrator John Green. Teen Boat! is the story of a boy with the power to transform into a small yacht! Free.

Weekdays May 4-14 by appointment.  

School Group Visits – Book a class trip to the Waterfront Museum. Visits aboard our "floating classroom" include first-hand learning about geography, history, social studies and science. And no visit is complete without entertainment by the Captain, just like the Showboats of old times. Appropriate for all ages. Costs $7 per person for Waterfront Museum tour, talk and show. Thursday, May 3 6pm and Tuesday, May 15 2pm

"Tug & Barge" Fundraiser Cruises –Enjoy a front row seat on a backstage tour of the NY Harbor for a unique adventure as two floating museums cruise by the Statue of Liberty to a new port of call. Support the ongoing preservation of two historic ships. The Tug Pegasus and Lehigh Valley No. 79 barge will each take 12 passengers on a one-way, 2-hour cruise. May 3 trip departs at 6pm for a Red Hook, Brooklyn to Hudson River Park Pier 25 Manhattan cruise and the May 15 voyage departs at 2 pm for a Hudson River Park Pier 25, Manhattan to Red Hook, Brooklyn cruise.
