Anchorage Community Theatre to Open A SHAYNA MAIDEL, 1/25

By: Jan. 17, 2013

Anchorage Community Theatre's next play, A Shayna Maidel (translated "A Pretty Girl") by Barbara Lebow, opens a week from this Friday on January 25. It is a warm drama with a wonderful story and features a great castm including Shane Mitchell.

A Jewish Polish family is torn apart as Papa Mordechai immigrates to America with little Rayzel, and Mama stays behind to nurse Lusia, who has scarlet fever. Now, twenty years later, Lusia finally arrives in New York after surviving WWII, to live with her sister, who is "Americanized." The sisters are unrecognizable to each other, each from a different world. Rayzel learns of her past and the horrors she was sheltered from, while Lusia holds onto the hope of finding her husband. The sisters begin to bridge the gap between them and with their father, ultimately discovering that their love, though forgotten, was never lost. A poignant, imaginatively conceived examination of one divided family's experience.

An exploration of human strength and frailty, softened by moments of humor, the play has been widely produced by America's leading regional theatres, and went on to become a long-run Off-Broadway success.

Reserve your seats online or call 868-4913. The show runs January 25 - February 17, 2013, playing Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays at 7 PM and Sundays at 3 PM.
