La Traviata -by Giuseppe Verdi. The tragic story of a woman who, having been led astray by the fortunes, power and lust of rich men, is forced to abandon redeeming love and happiness by the rigid norms of 19th century Parisian society. In a departure from his earlier operas with larger political themes, Verdi paints unforgettable and intimate musical portraits of three characters: the free-spirited courtesan Violetta, the love-struck young bourgeois Alfredo, and his duty-bound father Germont. From the first act's famous Libiamo chorus and Violetta's Sempre Libera, through the tension filled confrontation between Germont and Violetta, to the final tragic scene, this opera features some of Verdi's most recognizable music. It is his most human of stories which has made it an audience favorite for 160 years. Info: Opera Southwest at the KiMo Theatre, 5th and Central, 768-3544 http://www.operasouthwest.org Price: $10-75.

The Last 5 Years - by Jason Robert Brown, directed by Elizabeth Dwyer Sandlin. Jason Robert Brown's musical about a young couple who fall in and out of love over the course of five years is so raw in its honesty and beautiful in its execution that anyone who has ever struggled with loving another person cannot help but feel the ache of promise or of disappointment. As Jamie sings to Cathy at a crisis moment in their relationship, "No one can give you courage, no one can thicken your skin. I will not fail so you can be comfortable...I will not lose because you can't win." Info: Duke City Repertory Theatre at the Filling Station, 1024 4th St. SW, 797-7081, http://www.dukecityrep.com Price: $20, Seniors, Students & Military, $12.
