IS THERE LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?

This Sunday, May 7th at 5:30 PM at the Hippodrome, local high school theatre productions, as well as high school theatre critics will be celebrated in a Tony Awards-style ceremony with the annual Cappies.  Area high school students have been critiquing productions all year, with their efforts published in The Baltimore Sun, and those productions have also been nominated in a number of categories.  The plays nominated range from Flowers for Algernon to Shakespeare's As You Like It, and the musical nominees include The Mystery of Edwin Drood (my personal favoriteshow of all time – I'm not a judge), Guys and Dolls, The Pirates of Penzance, Grease, and Seussical the Musical (another favorite) and Damn Yankees.  Production numbers from these shows will be a highlight of the evening.  Tickets and more information can be found at www.cappies.com.  Congratulations to all the nominees on a job well done!

MY FAIR LADY

They say that behind every great man is a great woman—but what if she's not yours? Candida, George Bernard Shaw's witty comedy of love, desire, marriage, and morality opens at Everyman Theatre on May 16th.

Directed by Richard Pilcher, Candida explores strengths and weaknesses – of character, of the sexes, and of our love for another. The Reverend Morrell's domestic comfort is disturbed by a young idealistic romantic who lays his claim to the heart of Morrell's treasured wife, Candida, but does either see her as more than a trophy to be won? In classic Shavian fashion, what seems to be drawing room comedy quickly becomes simultaneously a deeper exploration of love, marriage and commentary about objectification of women.

Resident company member, Deborah Hazlett, leads the cast in the title role.  Hazlett is joined by fellow company member Stan Weiman as Burgess, her father. Candida's Victorian romantic triangle is completed by James Denvil (Light Up The Sky) as the right Reverend James Morell her husband, and newcomer Scott Kerns as the young idealist poet, her admirer. Two newcomers round out the cast: Jason Lott as Reverend Alexander Mill, and recent 2006 Helen Hayes Winner (Urinetown at Signature Theatre) Jenna Sokoloski as Prosperpine Garnet, Morell's doting secretary.

Candida runs May 16th through June 25th, offering performances Tuesday through Sunday.  For tickets call the Everyman Theatre Box Office at 410.752.2208 or online at www.everymantheatre.org.
