Poland's Gardzienice Premieres 'Iphigenia at Aulis' 10/4

Poland's acclaimed Staniewski Center for Theatre Practices Gardzienice presents the World Premiere of its newest production, Iphigenia at Aulis, directed and adapted from the Euripides classic by the renowned theatre artist Wlodzimierz Staniewski.  Previews start October 4; opening October 7 at La MaMa ETC (74A East 4th Street).

"Iphigenia at Aulis featuring original music by Zygmunt Konieczny, is a visual spectacle that examines how lives are affected by sacrifices made in the name of religion, politics and love. The production is performed in English, Polish and Ancient Greek, with scenes built on shadow and light, movement, gesture and music to tell Euripides' classic story of betrayal, deception, and sacrifice in a time of war," explain press notes.

Zygmunt Konieczny is world-renowned for his award-winning film scores, most notably for Jan Jakub Kolski's Pornography, an official selection of the 2003 New York Film Festival, based on Witold Gombrowicz's novel. Additionally, he has composed popular songs for a variety of artists, including famed Polish vocalist Ewa Demarczyk..Konieczny worked with Poland's top film and theatre directors, including Andrzej Wajda, Jerzy Jarocki, Konrad Swinarski, Tadeusz Konwicki, and Jan Jakub Kolski. He has won numerous Polish film awards and a Georges Delerue Prize at the Flanders International Film Festival for his film compositions.

The cast of Iphigenia at Aulis, led by Mariusz Golaj and Joanna Holcgreber, includes Maniucha Bikont, Charlie Cattrall, Karolina Cicha, Anna D¹browska, Benedict Hotchins, Justyna Jary, Tanushka Marah, Agnieszka Mendel, Marcin Mrowca, Jacek Timingeriu, and Barbara Wesolowska.

In addition to the composer Zygmunt Konieczny, the production team features Grzegorz Podbieglowski (light operator); Maciej Znamierowski (sound operator); Monika Onoszko (costumes); and Julia Bui-Ngoc (choreography).

Iphigenia at Aulis runs October 4 through 21 at La MaMa ETC (74A East 4th Street); Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30PM and Sundays at 2:30PM & 7:30PM.
