ANYTHING GOES comes to Toronto in this love letter to musical comedy. Mainstage is producing this beloved show as a celebration of its 10th anniversary as a force for arts education in Toronto. With classic songs by Cole Porter, Anything Goes still charms contemporary audiences. This boy meets girl story results in a number of madcap antics aboard a cruising ocean liner. Anything Goes is set aboard the ocean liner S. S. American, where nightclub singer/evangelist Reno Sweeney is en route from New York to England. Her pal Billy Crocker has stowed away to be near his love, Hope Harcourt, but the problem is Hope is engaged to the wealthy Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Joining this love triangle on board the luxury liner are Public Enemy #13, Moonface Martin and his sidekick-in-crime Erma. With the help of some elaborate disguises, tap-dancing sailors and good old-fashioned blackmail, Reno and Martin join forces to help Billy in his quest to win Hope’s heart.
Directed by Artistic Director Alain Richer, choreographed by Michele Shuster, and musical direction by Shari Porter, this production features dynamic, young performers who come from all four corners of the GTA and beyond. This show promises to be as outstanding as Mainstage Theatre Company’s many previous productions.
