Featuring two smash hit musicals - GREEN DAY'S AMERICAN IDIOT and HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL, our season will also include two hot and exciting contemporary plays: Aaron Posner's bold new riff on Chekhov's THE SEAGULL entitled STUPID f-ing BIRD - and a kind of co-production with Arizona Theatre Company - Laura Eason's steamy SEX WITH STRANGERS.

Sex With Strangers
Arizona Theatre Company presents a Stray Cat Theatre production by Laura Eason

September 26 - October 11, 2015
at Herberger Theater Center Stage West
February 2 - 21, 2016
at Temple of Music and Art in Tucson

Directed by Ron May

Letting a stranger in can always be dangerous.
Playing in a super fancy kitty condo with Arizona Theatre Company, SEX WITH STRANGERS will be performed at the Herberger Theater Center Stage West in Phoenix and at the Temple of Arts and Music in Tucson.

"Over the last decade or so, Arizona has been increasingly blessed with a flowering of theatrical invention from the independent theatre companies doing top-notch work in our region", said ATC Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein, "I have been eager to find ways for ATC to partner with our indie colleagues on projects and bring a wider range of theatrical work to our audiences. When Ron May and I discovered we both were eager to produce the delicious SEX WITH STRANGERS, it became a tremendous opportunity for ATC to collaborate with Stray Cat Theatre to give their exciting work more exposure in downtown Phoenix and Tucson, while bringing a provocative work to both theatres' audiences. I hope this will be the first of many such collaborations between ATC and other superb theatre companies around the state."

"The kind of opportunity and exposure this affords Stray Cat as we head into our 14th season is really extraordinary," said Stray Cat Artistic Director Ron May, "In a time when there is such declining governmental arts support and financial stress on arts organizations of all kinds, having THE State Theatre reach out to collaborate with us is incredibly exciting. We hope to ultimately help set a model and a trend for arts organizations statewide to pursue these kinds of collaborations."

A new comedy about the calculations people are making to find love and fame in an age of social media, brightly-lit smart phone screens, and virtual worlds. A raging snowstorm traps strangers Olivia, an unsuccessful, yet gifted, novelist, and Ethan, a tech-addicted and wildly successful young blogger, in a secluded cabin. Opposites instantly attract, undeniable chemistry ignites, and sex is imminent. As dawn rises, however, what could have been just a one-night-stand transforms into something much more complicated.

Heathers: The Musical

Book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O'Keefe
Based on the film written by Daniel Waters

December 4 - 20, 2015
at Tempe Performing Arts Center
Directed by Louis Farber
Choreography by Nicole Olsen of Scorpius Dance Theatre

What's your damage, Heather?
Fresh out of New York, Stray Cat is thrilled to be the first group of cats to bring this hilarious, blockbuster Off-Broadway hit to the Valley. Based on the classic 1988 film, HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL is the darkly twisted story of Veronica Sawyer, a brainy, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High: the Heathers. But before she can get comfortable atop the high school food chain, Veronica falls in love with the dangerously sexy new kid J.D. When Heather Chandler, the Almighty, kicks her out of the group, Veronica decides to bite the bullet and kiss Heather's aerobicized ass...but J.D. has another plan for that bullet. Are you IN? Or are you OUT? "Ingenious, naughty and very funny." - New York Post

Stupid f-ing Bird

By Aaron Posner

March 12 - 26, 2016
at Helen K. Mason Center for the Performing Arts
Directed by Ron May

It's THE SEAGULL. Just...on steroids.
You've never seen Chekhov like this. Irreverent, contemporary, smart, inventive, and very, very funny, Aaron Posner's bold and cheeky sort-of update of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull thrusts us into a country house where unrequited desire is drowned in equal parts alcohol and sarcasm. In true Chekhovian fashion, actresses, playwrights, doctors, and novelists bare their souls as they search desperately for the truth of love and art. STUPID f-ing BIRD skillfully remixes the renowned "subtext" of the classic play into exuberant and hysterical scenes and songs. "How does one have Chekhov speak to 21st-century America? See this production. I can only imagine Chekhov's delight were he to see his play so wisely reinvented." - LA Weekly

Green Day's
American Idiot

Music by Green Day
Lyrics by Billie Joe Armstrong
Book by Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer

June 24 - July 16, 2016
at the Tempe Center for the Arts
Directed by Ron May
Choreography by Lisa Starry - Artistic Director of Scorpius Dance Theatre

Do not adjust your set...

Stray Cat is purring crazy hard to be presenting the first local production of the two-time Tony Award-winning hit musical based on Green Day's Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum album, which boldly takes the American musical where it's never gone before. This high-octane show includes every song from Green Day's album American Idiot, as well as several songs from follow-up release, 21st Century Breakdown. An energy-fueled rock opera, AMERICAN IDIOT features little dialogue and instead relies on the lyrics from Green Day's groundbreaking album to execute the story line of teen rage, love, and loss that is wholly and utterly American. Choreography for AMERICAN IDIOT will be by Scorpius Dance Theatre's ever brilliant Lisa Starry.
