Blending blues, gospel, and traditional Jewish melodies in a breathtaking score, Caroline, or Change, the hit musical from Pulitzer Prize-winner Tony Kushner (Angels in America), will be presented by Workshop Theatre and Blue Cross Blue Shield March 20 - April 4.

Following its Broadway opening in May 2004, Caroline, or Change received Tony Award nominations for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Actress, Best Direction, and Best Featured Actress (winning the Tony in that category).

The musical tells the story of Caroline Thibodeaux, an African-American maid working for the Gellmans, a liberal Jewish family who reside in Lake Charles, La., in 1963. Caroline is unhappy with her job, struggling to support her family on $30 a week, and uncomfortable with the changing ideas of the times. Divorced, with three children to support on her own and a son in Vietnam, Caroline seeks comfort in the basement where she bonds with 8-year-old Noah Gellman.

In the stifling basement laundry, Caroline also interacts with The Washing Machine, The Dryer and The Radio, who all come to life throughout the show. The Radio takes the shape of a Supremes-like group that, along with The Washing Machine and The Dryer, gives voice to Caroline's inner turmoil.

Caroline, or Change features a cast of 17 spectacular actors including: Jocelyn Brannon (Caroline Thibodeaux); Henry Long (Noah Gellman); Lori Minor (Emmie Thibodeaux); Michelle Rivera (Dotty Moffett); Collette Blakeney (The Moon); Shawn Logan (The Dryer/The Bus); Aliya Saulter (The Washing Machine); Tiffany James, Ashley McFadden and LaToya Suber (The Radio); Marquis McLamore (Jackie Thibodeaux); and John Cooper (Joe Thibodeaux). Rounding out the ensemble are Jonathan Jackson (Stuart Gellman), Lou Warth (Rose Stopnick Gellman), Anna Dragoni-Logan (Grandma Gellman), Jim DeFelice (Grandpa Gellman), and Sidney Smith (Mr. Stopnick).

The production is directed by Jocelyn Sanders.
