TheatreWorks is proud to present Marco Polo, written by Jovi Tan Yit Long, winner of 24-Hour Playwriting Competition 2013 (Youth Category), directed by Sean Tobin.

This year, Marco Polo will tell a story about the strength of friendship between two friends who are so different as they stick together through tough times, overcome carious adversities and eventually love each other enough to let one another go.

Marco Polo marks the fourth edition of the Writers' Lab Writing & Community Programme's Performance Tour Series, showcasing new writing reflecting the heart and soul of Singaporeans. The performances will tour various venues in the South EastDistrict. The past three tours had staged winning scripts which put forth difficult yet relevant social issues to engage the community. Serunding in 2010 and 2011 saw attempts to address the issue of family, parent-child relations in a religious Muslim household; Saying Grace in 2012 dealt with the prevalence of mental illnesses and the prejudices surrounding it in Singapore. In 2013, Of Babies (not really) and People touched on sometimes sensitive issues of surrogacy, family, friendship in relation to race and religion.

Synopsis

Marco Polo is about two blind friends who reacquainted after death. They quickly discover that they are both still blind and proceed to attempt to figure if they ended up in Heaven or Hell. Amidst the uncertainty, they begin to understand what it is to be lonesome, fearful and utterly lost. The friends attempt to recapture the emotions invested in the lives of the living and within oneself. Eventually, it is about hope, and above love.
