BWW Review: BLACKBERRY WINTER at the Kitchen Dog Theater
by Aaron Zilbermann - May 29, 2016

Our parents are the people who raised us. They taught us things, kept an eye on us, bathed us, changed our diapers, and most significantly, they provided us with an over abundance of memories that ultimately helped shape who we are as we age and grow. But, now bare with me for a moment, what if an Underground mole could dig its way into your mind and rob you of those treasured memories? This is the crux of the creation myth for Alzheimer's disease developed by Vivienne Avery, the primary character in Steve Yockey's new play, Blackberry Winter, presented by the Kitchen Dog Theatre (KDT) as the first play in their eighteenth annual New Works Festival, in residence at the Undermain Theatre. A one-woman show is a rather difficult undertaking and KDT Artistic Company Member, Karen Parrish, undertook this project with an intensity that left the audience filled with emotion, laughter and tears, sometimes simultaneously. James C. Nicholson Shares THE NOTORIOUS JOHN MORRISSEY
by BWW News Desk - May 26, 2016

From gang member, political muscle, and prizefighter to New York State Senator, United States Congressman, and industry leader of the sport of kings—John Morrissey (1831–1878) was all of these and more. When the Morrissey family arrived in America in 1831, there were not many open doors for Irish immigrants, but he did not let his bloodline stop him. He was the kind of man who would challenge the infamous William Poole, better known as “Bill the Butcher,” just to make a name for himself. Morrissey knew that when there was an opportunity, he had to take it. This bravado led to more than one brush with death, but also to wealth and prestige. (more...)

Bay Area Musicals! to Wrap Inaugural Season with LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, 7/9-31
by BWW News Desk - May 20, 2016

Bay Area Musicals!, the newest non-profit theatrical organization to join the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area arts community, closes out its inaugural season with the multiple Tony Award-winning musical comedy, La Cage aux Folles. This thrilling and warmhearted farce centers around Georges and his lover Albin, who stars as Zaza at their St. Tropez drag nightclub 'La Cage aux Folles.' Problems arise when Georges' twenty-five year old son, Jean-Michel - a result from a brief encounter years back - announces that he is engaged to Anne Dindon, the daughter of a well-known homophobic politician, Edouard Dindon. Anne's parents want to come and meet Jean-Michel's mother and father. Little do they know that Albin, a man, has essentially been Jean-Michel's mother figure his whole life. This scenario propels audiences into side-splitting laughter, as well as teary-eyed moments of tenderness. La Cage Aux Folles is widely regarded as Jerry Herman's best score and features such classic songs as 'The Best of Times is Now,' 'Song In the Sand,' 'La Cage Aux Folles,' and 'I Am What I Am.'
