Japan Society welcomes back Shirotama Hitsujiya, internationally known performance artist, artistic director of the experimental theater company YUBIWA Hotel and founder of AJOKAI (Asian Women Performing Arts Collective), for a residency and public forum focused on the experiences of Vietnamese women who have immigrated to New York. In this Spring residency, as part of an ongoing project collecting the oral histories of Southeast Asian women, Hitsujiya will delve into New York's vibrant Vietnamese community through a series of immersive studies and conversations, compiling the personal stories of the women she encounters into a script that will be transcribed onto a long rice-paper handscroll.
Chudomir (Playwright) Chudomir (author of Uncle Tako, the Bell-hop, Feasible, Letter from the Province, and My Poor Uncle), born Dimitar Hristov Chorbadjiiski, was a Bulgarian writer-humorist, historian, and painter, born in 1890 in the village of Turia. His main focus were the mannerisms and traditions that sprung from the Bulgarian village. The authenticity with which Chudomir painted his characters paved the way for a comedic sensibility that is truly Bulgarian. Chudomir's short stories date as early as 1907, and he continued to be active until his death in 1967. To this day, he is celebrated for his ability to expose the masked reality of life during communist time and satirize it subtly and masterfully.

Based on the beloved book by War Horse author Michael Morpurgo, 946 explores everything we thought we knew about the D-Day landings in this tender musical tale of love and war. Adapted by Morpurgo and Emma Rice, who also directs, 946 is a Kneehigh production presented in association with Birmingham Repertory and Berkeley Repertory Theatres. Performances begin February 9 with the opening on February 10.
