The Gift Theatre has announced that Kareem Bandealy will star as Othello and artistic director and ensemble member Michael Patrick Thornton will play villainous Iago in its production of William Shakespeare's tragedy Othello, directed by Jonathan Berry (Dirty). The 13|14 Season at BCT closes with the World Premiere of The Uncanny Valley written and directed by Dwayne Blackaller and Matthew Cameron Clark. Their last collaboration, A Nighttime Survival Guide, reached the biggest audience in BCT history with a story that spanned sixteen time zones. But that was a play for the whole family. This one is just for the grown-ups. With The Uncanny Valley we will take you into the future to explore what it means to be human. Set in a place called the Longhouse, built as a rustic artists' retreat with a view of the Sawtooth Mountains, The Uncanny Valley will feature Carie Kawa, Matthew Cameron Clark, Justin Ness, Tracy Sunderland and Stitch Marker as Stanley, The Caretaker who may be less, and perhaps more, than human. New 'Eco-Drama' EXTREME WHETHER to Run 10/2-26 at TNC

'Extreme Whether,' a new 'eco-drama' written and directed by Karen Malpede, centers on an embattled American climate scientist living in an idyllic wilderness estate in the Northeast Coast. Set during the record-hot summers of 2004 and 2012, the play pits the scientist against his twin sister in a no-holds barred family struggle over land ownership and the future use of their wilderness estate. In one corner is John Bjornson, a composite of famous climatologists. In the other is his twin sister, Jeanne, an energy spokeswoman married to a skeptical lobbyist. Actor Jeff McCarthy ('Cheers,' 'Urinetown,' 'Chicago') heads the cast of six as the scientist. Theater Three Collaborative and Theater for the New City will present the work at TNC October 2 to 26, 2014, directed by the author. (more...)

THE FOOL'S LEAR Runs 5/5-25 at Phoenix Theatre

King Lear's fate is sealed in Shakespeare's play: to be tragically reunited with the one daughter he loves. But what would be the fate of his faithful Fool? That question lies at the heart of 'The Fool's Lear,' a new play by Randy Neale, which will have its New York premiere May 5 to 25 as a featured production of Phoenix Theatre Ensemble's Tenth Anniversary Spring Rep season at The Wild Project 195 E. 3rd Street (at Ave. B). This new, funny, poignant comedic drama follows the journey of the Fool and his King as they ply a path along side Shakespeare's great tragedy, exploring hilarious and harrowing byways between its scenes.
