Sarah Rice first burst onto the Broadway musical theater world in 1979 as the original Johanna in Stephen Sondheim's TONY Award-winning musical Sweeney Todd. The dazzling soprano later became a cabaret star, winning a 2010 Bistro Award and 2011 MAC Award for Best Female Vocalist. After performing cabaret in almost every major venue in New York, Rice has been performing an exciting new show-MUSIC OF THE NIGHT--at the popular restaurant/club PANGEA (178 2nd Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets) and will be presenting her third performance at the venue on September 20 at 7 pm. Bad Habit Productions is about to drop the final curtain after ten years of delivering award-winning theater, but they are not taking the easy way out. Director Dawn M. Simmons and an ensemble of eight actors make sense of Tom Stoppard's 1968 comedy whodunnit, THE REAL INSPECTOR HOUND, even as they squeeze very bit of theatrical nonsense from this old chestnut. The troupe plays well together and looks like they're taking their roles seriously, despite their characters saying and doing ridiculous things. (more...)

The life, work and legacy of beloved and prolific Bay Area composer, pianist, conductor and educator Herbert Bielawa (1930-2015) will be celebrated in a concert of his music Friday, April 29, at 8 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley, 1 Lawson Road, Kensington. Among other accomplishments, Bielawa served on the music faculty of San Francisco State University for 25 years, where he founded the contemporary music ensemble Pro Musica Nova, created electronic and computer music studios, instigated ground-breaking programs and curricula and was an indefatigable champion of new music. Admission to the concert –which spans 50 years of Bielawa's work--is free of charge and the public is invited to celebrate this remarkable artist, whose contributions to the Bay Area and American musical scenes have been substantial.  (more...)

Carson Merry Baillie, Founder of Atlantic Beach Experimental Theater (ABET), waxes nostalgic as she speaks about the community theatre she founded in 1992. In honor of ABET's 25th season beginning in September, ABET is presenting a staged reading of Kenneth Lonergan's THE WAVERLY GALLERY, which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 2001.
