BWW Reviews: Houston Ballet's THE MERRY WIDOW is Opulently Romantic
by David Clarke - Sep 20, 2013

As a ballet, THE MERRY WIDOW is an adaptation of Franz Lehar's popular romantic operetta Die Lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow), which premiered in 1905. In the process of adapting the score for ballet, John Lanchbery and Alan Abott retained the style of Franz Lehar's orchestrations and included several of the well-known tunes from the operetta. Their score premiered in 1975 when The Australian Ballet, under the Musical Direction of John Lanchbery, produced the World Premiere production with choreography by Ronald Hynd and Scenario and Staging by Sir Robert Helpmann. This grandiose and radiant ballet of THE MERRY WIDOW had its Houston Ballet Premiere on September 17, 1995 in the Brown Theater. The Houston Ballet also performed it in 1999 and 2007. Now, in 2013, the lavish production is serving as Mireille Hassenboehler's gorgeous Swan Song and letter of admiration to the audiences of the Houston Ballet. (more...)

BWW Reviews: THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, The Young Vic, November 1 2013
by Adrian Bradley - Nov 2, 2013

Kander and Ebb have an unrivalled ability to tackle a dark subject without making it maudlin. THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, one of the final collaborations of this prolific pair, is no exception. Taking the form of a minstrel show, The Scottsboro Boys tells the shameful story of nine boys arrested from a train in Alabama and accused and convicted of a crime they didn't commit. (more...)

BWW Reviews: A.R. Gurney In THE GRAND MANNER at the Good Theater
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Nov 14, 2013

The Good Theater's (Portland, ME) New England premiere of A.R. Gurney's latest play, The Grand Manner, is a wistful, droll, and stylish production of this charming, nostalgic paean to theatre on the Great White Way in 1948. The play, which originally opened at New York's Lincoln Center Theatre in 2010, deals with an autobiographical episode, augmented into legend. (more...)

BWW Interviews: Jinkx Monsoon Talks Career, THE VAUDEVILLIANS, and THE INEVITABLE ALBUM
by David Clarke - May 31, 2014

The always charming and incredibly talented Jinkx Monsoon proved to the American public that it was truly Monsoon Season for the last year. On May 19, 2014, she passed on the RuPaul's Drag Race crown to the sixth season's winner Bianca Del Rio. Certainly Hurricane Bianca is sure to rattle the world, but for all intents and purposes it is still Monsoon Season the world over. Jinkx Monsoon is going strong, working harder than ever, and proving that she is a talent to be reckoned with. Shortly after she helped coronate Binaca Del Rio, I chatted with Jinkx Monsoon about her career, THE INEVITABLE ALBUM, her debut solo album, and what's next for the indefatigable star. (more...)

AMERICAN IDOL Preview: IDOL Needs a Mount Rushmore Champion
by Matt Tamanini - May 20, 2014

No matter what happens in tonight's performances, Jena not only deserves to be crowned this season's champ, but IDOL needs her to be crowned this season's champ. It is no secret that the once indomitable singing competition has taken an unceremonious dive in the ratings in recent years. While the show's total numbers are respectable in this proliferated entertainment environment, if the show is ever to reclaim even a piece to its previous status as a cultural touchstone, it needs to again produce a star that reminds America of the show's power. BWW Reviews: From Kaufmann and Florez to Beczala and Camarena, It's the Year of the Tenor
by Richard Sasanow - May 13, 2014

“The party's over,” wrote Betty Comden & Adolph Green in BELLS ARE RINGING. “It's time to call it a day.” The opera season at the Metropolitan said its farewells to 2013-2014 on May 10 with a bel canto doubleheader of Rossini's LA CENERENTOLA (a shot heard round the world via radio and The Met's LIVE IN HD) and Bellini's IL PURITANI--not a bad Swan Song, considering the singing talent involved. Glee-Cap: City of Angels.
by Robert Lawlor - Mar 11, 2014

Let the sunshine in, Gleeks! No, there's not going to be a production of Hair this week - thank god. This week, the Gleeks are hitting the land of sun, surf, and celebrities. You guessed it, Gleeks - the New Directions are hitting LA! It's Nationals time, and the battle is on to win one for the home team, including several departing seniors. Will New Directions come out victorious or will LaLa land send them packing as fast as a Jennifer Aniston comedy after opening weekend? It's Nationals in LA, Gleeks! Get into it! Will calls Sam to his office and instills in him confidence to be the leader that Finn once was, despite Sam being unsure of such a title. Carole and Burt stop by the choir room, and instill their own confidence into the glee club with memories of Finn, but with optimism and fun as their main point. With the Hummel-Hudson's as chaperones, the glee club gets psyched for Nationals with 'I Love LA'. Once in LA, the glee clubs hits the sightseeing tour and really feel the love for the City of Angels. Once at the hotel, the glee club gets a familiar visitor in Mercedes, who has finally found success in music. The New Directions meet their competition in Throat Explosion and their leading man, Jean Baptiste (none other than Broadway's Skylar Astin). Ryder asks Marley about why she seems to have given up on her love of music, but doesn't really like that Marley is considering this Nationals to be her Swan Song. The New Directions sneak onto the stage to have a moment the night before performance, where Sam calls to mind Finn's promise that they'd make it to Nationals and win, and plans to keep that promise. Jean Baptiste and Throat Explosion crash the moment, and despite the gauntlet being thrown, respect the memory of their loss and struggle as a club over the years, but also reminds them that everyone is waiting to see if they can overcome their circumstances. BWW Reviews: A Gripping, Wrenching JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG at American Century Theater
by Andrew White - Jun 11, 2014

Opening as it does to coincide with the 70th anniversary of D-Day, Joe Banno's moving production reminds us just how much we are still haunted by the ghosts of World War II, and the horrific moral dilemmas of those days. With a large cast that is mostly up to the material Banno has given us a memorable evening of theater that challenges us. Forget plays that give you a cozy, morally superior perch, Mann the playwright and Banno the director force us to think about how we contributed to the monster that was Adolf Hitler. (more...)
