Guy meets girl. They make some music. And they either end up together or apart, delighting or devastating their respective audiences. It's just as typical a story as the romance of the Broadway musical (and usually has a similar effect). Well, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's Once is hailed for dashing the typical boy meets girl tale, and its North American tour installment does not seem to do typical either. Magic was made at New Haven's Shubert Theatre last night as the cast of Once took their first bow of the weekend (and received the first of what are likely to become many standing ovations). Producers Robert Fox, Matthew Byam Shaw for Playful Productions and Royal Court Theatre Productions have revealed that Matthew Dunster's production of Martin McDonagh's Hangmen has recouped in under six weeks. The news comes as the production is announced the winner of the Critic's Circle 'Best New Play' and 'Best Design' Awards today. Following a sell out run at the Royal Court Theatre, Matthew Dunster's production of Martin McDonagh'sHangmen transferred to the West End for a strictly limited season in December and must end on 5 March. Following multiple sold out engagements, Charlie Rosen's Broadway Big Band returns to the intimate Manhattan venue Feinstein's/ 54 Below on Saturday February 20th to continue an official residence for 2015. The 9:30 PM concert, helmed by director Max Friedman, features guest vocalists Gerard Canonico (Spring Awakening, American Idiot), Nicholas Christopher (Motown The Musical, Lazarus), Matt Doyle (The Book of Mormon, Spring Awakening), Tony Award Nominee Bryce Pinkham (Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, The Heidi Chronicles), Alysha Umphress (On The Town, American Idiot), and more TBA. As BroadwayWorld reported earlier today, GRAMMY and Tony Award-winning musician Duncan Sheik's American Psycho: Original London Cast Recording will be available on March 25, 2016 via Concord Records. The album's release will coincide with the show's U.S. premiere on Broadway, with previews beginning March 24 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater at 236 West 45th Street in New York City. (more...)

On Monday, February 1st, Theater People Podcast welcomes SCHOOL OF ROCK star Alex Brightman. Before being cast in the leading role in the new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Brightman made his Broadway debut as an understudy in GLORY DAYS (the show that infamously closed on its opening night). He went on to replace in the role of  Boq in the Broadway company of WICKED, Michael Wormwood in the Broadway company of MATILDA, and then joined the original Broadway company of BIG FISH. (more...)
