BWW Album Review: HAIRSPRAY LIVE!
by Remy Holzer - Jan 5, 2017

Skeptics of musical theater like to ask, 'But how do they know the song?' when characters join in during a musical number. One of the virtues of HAIRSPRAY is that the audience itself actually does this: the songs are so catchy that we start singing along. This is appropriate, given the show's message of inclusivity and empowerment of the ordinary. Marc Shaiman (music and lyrics) and Scott Wittman (lyrics) are responsible for the irresistible score of this show, set in Baltimore in the 1960s, that follows plucky, overweight teenager Tracy Turnblad's quest to integrate the 'Corny Collins Show,' an AMERICAN BANDSTAND-style teen dance party that she adores. Along the way, she falls in love with one of its stars, locks horns with another, makes new friends who are black and have a different perspective and a different way of dancing, and finds a place for herself on the show and in life. And her mother Edna and best friend Penny also benefit from Tracy's widening world. (more...)

BWW Blog: Amanda Grillo - Finding the Fit: Typecasting
by Guest Blogger: Amanda Grillo - Jan 3, 2017

A big part of show business is typecasting. There are "types" that people fall into. These can be based around age, race, gender, and personality. Some people this as an opportunity to play to their strengths. I once participated in a workshop where the instructor told us to "know our types". He then began to call people out one by one: "You're a Fierstein. Try looking at Edna Turnblad or Tevye." "You're a Broderick. Look at his roles." "Streisand. You have a lot of options for material." He compared us to already well known household names in the theatre world. What about embracing who you naturally are? Why be the next [insert celebrity here], when you can make a name for yourself and be original? There are stock characters that people naturally gravitate towards with ease whether it be by look or by personality, but if people get locked into these types it begins to be all they are seen as. To some people, these types can be seen as limiting. There's not much variety in roles if they play the same kind of part over and over. Actors should try to expand their range of roles when possible. The popular belief of what is attractive doesn't necessarily need to be the leading players driving the action, but just because someone who isn't conventionally attractive drives the story doesn't mean it is an ugly duckling tale. Dramaturgy also comes into play if a character description is explicitly influencing the script. That being said, I've seen several productions where the characters look phenomenal. They are a perfect depiction of how the story describes, but the talent was subpar. It was very clear that a different person was a much better fit, though they might not have been the perfect image. This idea got me thinking: Just because you look the part, does that mean you deserve it?  (more...)

Come March, we'll be drowning in the onslaught of opening after opening and biting our nails while pressing refresh on a Google search for New York Times reviews, but right now, everything seems possible and full of hope. Well, maybe not for the guy Randy met who left Hamilton before the opening number was finished. Yeah, he exists. BWW Feature: Our Favorite Moments of 2016
by Kyle Christopher West - Dec 31, 2016

By all accounts, 2016 has been quite the rollercoaster ride. Fortunately for DFW audiences, the local theatre community and many of the touring productions delivered nothing short of a stellar year, setting quite a high bar for upcoming performances. As we say goodbye to another December, we'd like to look back on a handful of memories that stood out among the long list of Playbills we've gathered. And like raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, these live theatre moments will be remembered as a few of our favorite things. We present this list in no particular order, and without awards or titles bestowed upon those listed. To everyone who contributed to the DFW theatre community in 2016, we thank you for sharing your time and talents with us. (more...)
