BWW Interview: Actress Jennafer Newberry Talks FREAKY FRIDAY at the Alley

Houston's Alley Theatre will open a new musical comedy, FREAKY FRIDAY, on June 2 to will play through July 2. A co-production by La Jolla Playhouse, Cleveland Playhouse, and Alley Theatre, directed by Christopher Ashley, this wild classic has been translated into a contemporary musical comedy based on Mary Rodger's novel of the same name, with music and lyrics by Tom Kitt and   Brian Yorkey of Next to Normal and If/Then. I spoke with Jennifer Newberry, Houston native and avid performer about her performance past growing up in Houston and the striking similarity she has to her character in FREAKY FRIDAY, Gretchen. BWW Feature: Antonia Bennett Brings a Lifetime of Performing to Café Carlyle in Venue Debut

Antonia Bennett, daughter of Tony Bennett and accomplished vocalist in her own right, is a lifelong performer. Since she "could walk and talk," according to her bio, Bennett has been performing with artists of legendary status: Rosemary Clooney, Regis Philbin, and, of course, her father. For the last 10 years, she has served as Tony's opening act in live shows and, in addition, has performed duets with him, including on his holiday album, A SWINGIN' CHRISTMAS. On May 23, Bennett will make her Cafe Carlyle debut in New York with a set comprised of selections from the American Songbook, a perfect fit for her inherited charm and too-cool demeanor, paired with her uniquely coy voice. ICE Performs Free Pop-Up Concert at Miller Theatre on 6/6

The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), returns to the Miller Theatre for ICE: Animal Behaviors, a free Pop-Up concert on Tuesday, June 6 at 6:00 p.m. ICE members Jacob Greenberg (piano), Nuiko Wadden (harp), Ryan Muncy (saxophone), and Dan Lippel (guitar) will perform a program that re-examines the basic animal nature of each of the featured instruments' personalities, from ferocity to tenderness, and everything in between. The chamber pieces explore how instruments camouflage each other's sound, while the natural and unnatural tendencies of harp, saxophone, and Indian harmonium are highlighted in the solo works. BWW Review: Poetry is in Motion in Soulpepper's FOR COLORED GIRLS

Ntozake Shange's poetry is in very capable hands with Soulpepper Theatre Company's captivating production of FOR COLORED GIRLS…(for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the Rainbow is enuf). Described as a 'choreopoem', the work is a spirited unity of written word and dance. The text alone is provocative and beautifully rhythmic, but Djanet Sears' production elevates the work with choreography that accentuates the power of the words. A true ensemble piece, FOR COLORED GIRLS is an homage to the unique journey we are all on, and the healing power in sharing your voice. (more...)
