Oh, man. Oh man oh man oh man oh man. I'm gonna be honest here: tonight's episode was full of man tears, 'important' discussions that literally went nowhere, and the superhero that is Kaitlyn's whole face of makeup that doesn't move, even when she sobs her eyes out. So many questions, so little time! Let's dive in. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Antaeus Offers Sumptuous and Scintillating PICNICBWW Reviews: Antaeus Offers Sumptuous and Scintillating PICNIC
by Don Grigware - Jun 28, 2015

William Inge's Pulitzer-Prize-winning Picnic depicting a small Kansas town in 1952, its strict code of morality and the inner longings of its people to break away, is perhaps his finest. Now in a stunning production at Antaeus directed ever so lovingly by Cameron Watson and boasting a superlative ensemble - actually three alternating casts: 'Deviled Eggs', 'Stuffed Peppers' and 'Pork Chops', Picnic still holds up some 60 years later, proving the omnipotence of human fragility. My visit was with the 'Deviled Eggs'cast. The music, the clothes, the hairstyles, and the cars are distinctly 50s, but goals, motivations and emotions remain the same. For those unfamiliar with the play or the uber popular 1956 film Picnic starring William Holden and Kim Novak, let's recap the plot briefly. (more...)

by Gil Kaan - Jun 26, 2015

William Inge's 1953 Pulitzer Prize winner Picnic certainly holds up quite well in Antaeus Theatre Company's expert and streamlined production. Cameron Watson directs his talented cast without any extraneous beats, moments, or gestures. Every little detail quite essential and integral to Inge's tale of a drifter's affect on a bunch of traditional Kansas folks back in 1952. (more...)

BWW Reviews: American Players Theatre Perfects Ancient Story of AN ILIADBWW Reviews: American Players Theatre Perfects Ancient Story of AN ILIAD
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Jun 22, 2015

A college classroom, perhaps set in Ireland because a bottle of Jameson Whiskey appears for the poet to quench his thirst, greets the Touchstone Theatre Audiences at American Players Theatre (APT) in their opening play An Iliad. Outside the classroom rumblings and unrest from unidentified crowds can be heard--Unite James DeVita enters playing the narrator, the poet, the teacher in corduroy pants, tweed suit coat, a woolen vest, pliad tie and white shirt. Similar dress to what the part-time teacher, poet and writer James Joyce, who set contemporary literature on edge with his epic 'Ulysses', the latinized name of hero warrior Odysseus in Homer's 8th century 'Iliad' and 'Odyssey.' Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare wrote the stunning 2012 adaptation of 'Iliad' directed at APT by John Langs. (more...)

Orange County, Calif.—June 30, 2015—A shining jewel among the most popular piano repertoire, Beethoven's “Emperor” concerto bursts to life at Pacific Symphony's Summer Festival in the hands of internationally renowned pianist Rueiben Chen. The Boston Globe has said: “He plays with the white-hot energy, steel-fingered power and athletic virtuosity… Chen showed that he can play with delicacy and imagination.” Full of romanticism, majesty and beauty, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 is the last piece the composer wrote in concerto form and has remained the favorite among his fans. Led by Assistant Conductor Alejandro Gutiérrez in his Summer Festival debut, this concert also marks the maestro's final performance with the Symphony.
