Oh, man. Oh man oh man oh man oh man. I'm gonna be honest here: tonight's episode was full of man tears, 'important' discussions that literally went nowhere, and the superhero that is Kaitlyn's whole face of makeup that doesn't move, even when she sobs her eyes out. So many questions, so little time! Let's dive in. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Antaeus Offers Sumptuous and Scintillating PICNICBWW Reviews: Antaeus Offers Sumptuous and Scintillating PICNIC
by Don Grigware - Jun 28, 2015

William Inge's Pulitzer-Prize-winning Picnic depicting a small Kansas town in 1952, its strict code of morality and the inner longings of its people to break away, is perhaps his finest. Now in a stunning production at Antaeus directed ever so lovingly by Cameron Watson and boasting a superlative ensemble - actually three alternating casts: 'Deviled Eggs', 'Stuffed Peppers' and 'Pork Chops', Picnic still holds up some 60 years later, proving the omnipotence of human fragility. My visit was with the 'Deviled Eggs'cast. The music, the clothes, the hairstyles, and the cars are distinctly 50s, but goals, motivations and emotions remain the same. For those unfamiliar with the play or the uber popular 1956 film Picnic starring William Holden and Kim Novak, let's recap the plot briefly. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Jul 12, 2015

Orange County, Calif.—July 10, 2015—It is a night of spicy, riveting music and dance featuring salsa, Cuban rhythms and the sounds of Spain, when Pacific Symphony, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, delivers the third concert of Summer Festival 2015. The evening is chock-full of hot-tempered tunes, including Ravel's “Bolero,” featuring the most famous drumbeat in classical music and immortalized in the movie “10”; Rimsky-Korsakov's sparkling orchestral painting of Spain, Capriccio Espagnol, full of passionate tunes and brilliant colors that have made it a smash-hit concert favorite; the short but potent “Ritual Fire Dance” from de Falla's ballet, “El amor brujo”; and excerpts from Bizet's alluring “Carmen,” sung by opera star, mezzo-soprano Milena Kiti?.  The band JT & Friends then delivers high-octane entertainment on the second half, which includes Bizet's “Farandole” from L'Arlesienne Suite No. 2 and Bernstein's heart-pumping “America” from the classic film, “West Side Story.” Completing the mix are dancers, Salsa king Bobby Rivas, singer Beau Williams, and music that includes Barry Mann's “On Broadway,” Flores' rowdy “Tequila” and more.  (more...)

Orange County, Calif.—June 30, 2015—A shining jewel among the most popular piano repertoire, Beethoven's “Emperor” concerto bursts to life at Pacific Symphony's Summer Festival in the hands of internationally renowned pianist Rueiben Chen. The Boston Globe has said: “He plays with the white-hot energy, steel-fingered power and athletic virtuosity… Chen showed that he can play with delicacy and imagination.” Full of romanticism, majesty and beauty, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 is the last piece the composer wrote in concerto form and has remained the favorite among his fans. Led by Assistant Conductor Alejandro Gutiérrez in his Summer Festival debut, this concert also marks the maestro's final performance with the Symphony. This wonderful evening of music under the stars opens with Verdi's stormy and colorful “La Forza Del Destino” and concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov's “Scheherazade,” a musical rendition of “Arabian Nights.” (more...)
