BWW Review: RSVP 'Yes' to Game-Changing MADAME DRAGON'S 60TH BIRTHDAY BASH at Café Nordo
by Amelia Reynolds - Jan 16, 2017

It's easy to feel skeptical when young Sara Porkalob steps onto Cafe Nordo's stage and claims to be celebrating her sixtieth birthday. But with her effortless 'still-got-it' physicality and chutzpa, Porkalob became a believably spry sixty-years-young Madame Dragon. In her latest iteration of her one-woman show 'The Dragon Lady'--Porkalob's tribute to her gangster grandma--'Madame Dragon's 60th Birthday' is an expansive and immersive tribute that tells Maria Porkalob's (aka Madame Dragon) stories of sex, murder and motherhood through spoken word, music, and food. This is not just dinner theatre. This is a party. (more...)

Author of 'Blue Blue Sea Finds His Cape' Donates Copies of Book to Children's Books on Wheels
by BWW News Desk - Jan 16, 2017

Miranda N. Prather, author of 'Blue Blue Sea Finds His Cape,' donates copies of the popular children's book to Children's Books on Wheels and Reach out and Read at Boston Children's Primary Care Clinic. Both organizations seek to provide books to children, the primary audience of Blue Blue Sea Finds His Cape. In particular, Prather hopes that the copies to children that are facing challenging circumstances in their own lives will give them comfort and strength through the inspirational story. 'Blue Blue Sea Finds His Cape,' published by Shoofly View, tells the life story of a blue-collar racehorse who overcame a devastating illness to survive and inspire thousands around the globe who were facing their own struggles and illnesses. The book features playful writing and delightful pictures, by Kentucky artist Hayley Mullins, that bring the tale of Blue Blue Sea to life. Blue Blue Sea was no American Pharaoh, but he became a hero just the same. To learn more and follow Blue Blue Sea's world visit: https://www.facebook.com/BlueBlueSeaOTTB. Miranda N. Prather was born in Texas and grew up in Mississippi, Louisiana and Kentucky. The first horse she recalls following was Seattle Slew, who was born the same year she was, but it was Alydar that was her first horse racing Love (and Blue Blue Sea's great-grandsire). During her time in Kentucky, she took horseback riding lessons and owned an off-track Thoroughbred named Beble. Founded in 2004, Children's Books on Wheels' mission is to promote reading in rural communities and urban communities by providing books to students and their families. Located in Montgomery County, Texas, has donated thousands of books to children, churches and other non-profits. They serve a population that sees 75% of people at or below poverty level. A national program, Reach out and Read promotes school readiness and early literacy. The program helps to accomplish these goals by providing children books at different age milestones through their primary care physician; training to doctor's and nurses to be able to impress upon parents the importance of literacy and by having volunteers in waiting rooms to read to children and demonstrate the importance of reading. This model has been an important addition to the Boston Children's Primary Care Clinic, which has provided nearly a million books to children. Shoofly View seeks to give authors honest feedback, and if an author presents a well-written, interesting book, the chance at publication. In late 2015, they published 'Blue Blue Sea Finds His Cape,' their first book. They are currently looking at other book projects and plan an online journal to highlight the best in writing, art and photography. Shoo-Fly View Publications (more...)

BWW Review: THE PHANTOM TOOL BOOTH at Ensemble Theatre
by Roy Berko - Jan 16, 2017

Much like Lewis Carroll's ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND and L. Frank Baum's THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF OZ, Norton Juster's THE PHANTOM TOLL BOOTH is a fantasy adventure. All three are perceived as tales for children, but, in reality, though they are intended to teach youngsters, the messages are often so complex that they go over the heads of their intended audience. BWW Review: [TITLE OF SHOW] at Playhouse On Park
by Joseph Harrison - Jan 16, 2017

Broadway has given us many things - both successes and flops, brilliant (and sometimes not-so-brilliant) music, and the opportunity to sit in an audience and be transported to a new reality. For some, myself included, the countless hours spent in an audience (or on a stage), at home listening (and re-listening) to cast albums, or scouring the web for the latest piece of theater gossip are counted as some of the most exciting and memorable moments of our lives. The few hours spent sitting in a darkened theater or following the liner notes as you devour a new musical are sacred - taking us to places we gleefully imagine - places with fantastical characters and beautiful settings. And though you often see a glimmer of familiarity in the plot, the characters you encounter aren't necessarily people you might bump into on the street, have over to watch TV, or call your friends. But in Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowen's [TITLE OF SHOW], the current production at Playhouse on Park in West Hartford, audiences aren't asked to suspend reality and take a magical journey to a faraway land, instead, they have the rare opportunity to join four real people, people just like them, who Love performing (and making art) as they create something together - an original musical. The Artistic Director of South Portland's Mad Horse Theatre Company is talking about the theatre's upcoming Maine premiere of Jennifer Haley's dark and riveting drama, The Nether, which opens Thursday, January 19, 2017. Marshall, who has also directed the play and created the props and costumes, is undaunted by the disturbing themes of Jennifer Haley's sci-fi thriller which raises provocative moral issues, because she says, ' Despite the gravity of the situations it deals with, it is a beautiful piece that I find absolutely bewitching.'
