by BWW Special Coverage - Dec 21, 2014

Since opening on Broadway in 1987, Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods has become a musical theatre staple, having been performed in venues big and small all over the world. Based on some of the most enduring fairytales ever told, Into the Woods gives a musical voice to such beLoved characters as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack, and countless others, intertwining their stories into one theatrical masterpiece. Though much of the musical is based on the stories that we heard at bedtime, many of the tales have been altered [spoiler alert!] to create a cohesive plot. In anticipation of Disney's upcoming big screen version of the musical, which hits theatres on Christmas day, BroadwayWorld is traveling back to 'Once Upon a Time' to take a closer look at the original fairy tale characters, and how some of their fates differ in Into the Woods! The holiday season is in full swing, and holiday magic is all around. Especially at the Denver Center's production of A Christmas Carol. The classic tale by Charles Dickens has been told countless times, and every variation brings the same wonder and spirit of giving to life. As the lights dim and the hum of the pre-show crowd settles, the audience can't help but wonder what variation of the tale they will be treated to in this annual tradition at the DCPA. (more...)

BWW Reviews: NJT's Fascinating BECOMING DR. RUTHBWW Reviews: NJT's Fascinating BECOMING DR. RUTH
by Chris Gibson - Dec 20, 2014

Few people reach that status in life where all you have to do is hear their name and you know exactly who they are, but Dr. Ruth Westheimer is certainly one of those individuals that have reached that level of fame. Her place in history is undeniable, and she's definitely someone whose journey is inspiring and worthy of inclusion in The New Jewish Theatre's 'chai', or 18th season, which celebrates life. If there is anyone who could truly be called a survivor, but maybe would better be described as a 'thriver', because she seems to have an uncanny drive to succeed, it would be her. NJT's presentation of Mark St. Germain's BECOMING DR. RUTH is a fascinating tour through the highlights and lowlights she dealt with on her rise to becoming a cultural icon, and it's a very entertaining and emotional piece of theatre that should not be missed.
