by Kyle West - Mar 30, 2015

With the show's Broadway debut in 1951, followed by the 1956 Academy-Award-winning film adaption, Rodger's and Hammerstein's THE KING AND I has been captivating audiences for over 60 years. Yul Brenner, the most iconic and well-known of the actors who have played the King, not only starred in both stage and film incarnations of this classic musical, but he brought the show's national tour to the Music Hall at Fair Park in 1989, where the acclaimed musical is currently being revived by Dallas Summer Musicals. Though the current production's leader may lack Brenner's clout and charisma, this locally produced musical provides a high-quality, dazzling opportunity to celebrate and enjoy this timeless classic. Her name was Lee Joseph. She passed away in 2013 at the age of 96, after what was in every sense of the term a full life. She hung around with the sort of people who got called before the HUAC, was married for a time to Arthur Herzog, Jr. (who co-wrote the Billie Holliday standard 'God Bless the Child'), and was an activist up through the later days of her life, when she marched in Occupy Wall Street protests. And she served as the basis for Vera, the punchy nonagenarian at the center of her granddaughter Amy Herzog's play 4000 Miles, now in its Colorado debut at the Fine Arts Center. (more...)

by Jill Schafer - Mar 30, 2015

Have you ever imagined your life as a musical? Lifelong BFFs Max and Sheena have done more than imagine it - they've written it! And since in addition to being best friends, Max Wojtanowicz and Sheena Janson are both super talented music-theater artists* (you may know Max from the Children's Theatre and Sheena from numerous production with Mu Performing Arts), the result is a musical that's not only fun and entertaining, but also brutally honest and from the heart. FRUIT FLY: THE MUSICAL began as a hit Fringe show in 2012 and has had several workshops and readings since, and is now a full-fledged show at Illusion Theater. Each time I see it, it has a bit more depth, but always retains the beautiful, poignant, hilarious, endearing heart that is this real life friendship. (more...)

by Robert Barossi - Mar 30, 2015

There are many ways a playwright, filmmaker, writer or artist can work their themes and messages into a creative work. In some cases, those themes are delivered subtly, with nuance, so they're almost imperceptible at first but land in the audience's mind long after they've witnessed the work of art. At the other end of the spectrum, important messages can be put at the forefront, told in forceful and undeniable ways so that the audience is immediately confronted with them. Both of those approaches can and do often work. Unfortunately, in the Wilbury Group's current production of Rapture, Blister, Burn, the messages are delivered at the expense of a captivating compelling story or engaging characters. (more...)

by Christine Swerczek - Mar 30, 2015

GUTENBERG! THE MUSICAL! is ridiculous! Cathy Hirsch (the Candy Project) assembled a whole cast of zany characters within two award-winning actors- Dan Chevalier (Bud Davenport +others) and Steve Krambeck (Doug Simon +others). These two guys wear a multitude of hats (literally and figuratively) in this two act musical by Anthony King and Scott Brown. The story centers on Bud's and Doug's scant research of Johannes Gutenberg and his invention of the printing press. Fast paced, satiric, and just plain stupid fun, this production is a sure hit, particularly combined with good beer and great pizza at Pizza Shoppe Collective in Omaha. (more...)

A FINE LINE: THE BEGINNING Wins Apple Book Award for ExcellenceA FINE LINE: THE BEGINNING Wins Apple Book Award for Excellence
by BWW News Desk - Mar 30, 2015

'A Fine Line: The Beginning' by JC Brennan receives Medalist Honors in the 'Historical Fiction' category of the 2014 New Apple Book Awards for Excellence in Independent Publishing. Book Synopsis When you are a soldier, the thought of getting back to your family, without being surrounded by a pine box, is what keeps you going. This line of thinking was no different for William T. Healthaway, a Union soldier fighting in the battle of Pickett's Mill. However, William would find out living through this battle would only throw him into a whirlwind of an abnormal variety of hell. He had no way of knowing a more sinister war awaits him when and if he did return home. The war awaiting his homecoming is a war that has been raging for hundreds of years. A war that would lead him and the Crew into a world they never known or believed existed. After he and some comrades have fulfilled their commitment to the battle of freedom, they are vaulted into a merciless coldblooded war of the ancients. They are plunged into a world of mystery filled with intrigue, deception, death, temptation, and powers. However, with every miraculous power revealed comes a sinister evil and their survival is the only thing that will save mankind. About the Author JC Brennan grew up in a small village in Michigan called Skidway Lake. In Brennan's own words, 'The small town life was a fantastic way to grow up but I always wanted more. My life was a difficult one and being a single mother most of my life made me realize that willpower is a person's greatest friend. I found my calling in the arts at Central Michigan University but with the birth of my son I could not pursue that adventure. I currently hold three degrees and live in Arizona were I have found a beauty that is without compare. I have struggled most of my life to get where I am and know that there are more battles yet to face. However, with will, strength, and the Love of my family and friends, ?I know I can accomplish anything.'
