24th STreet Theatre's Teatro del Pueblo ('Theater of the Village') returns in 2014 with the world premiere of La Vispera ('The Eve'), another warm, funny and unique holiday play about love and sacrifice created from stories shared by members of the local immigrant community during workshops with professional theater artists. Written by Victor Vazquez, co-directed by Jesus Castaños-Chima and Sayda Trujillo, and supported by The James Irvine Foundation Exploring Engagement Fund, La Vispera gets four performances Dec. 6 through Dec. 14 at 24th STreet Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. All performances are in Spanish with English supertitles, and admission is only 24 cents. Following each performance, the audience will be invited to join the performers for a Posada (Christmas procession) around the neighborhood before heading back to the theater for homemade tamales, warm ponche (punch) and a traditional star-shaped piñata. For DIRECTOR'S CHOICE, the second program of Pacific Northwest Ballet's 2014-2015season, Artistic Director Peter Boal selects two PNB premieres paired with stunning repertory works in this absorbing mixed-bill. Opening the program, David Dawson's breath-taking, hyper-extended A Million Kisses to my Skin references the intoxicating bliss dancers experience while performing. Rassemblement, Nacho Duato's poignant work set to slave songs by Haitian artist Toto Bissainthe, voices communal yearning and resistance in a climate of oppression. Annabelle Lopez Ochoa's (Cylindrical Shadows) critically-acclaimed signature piece, Before After, a PNB premiere, unmasks the turmoil just before a relationship ends. The performance closes with Debonair, a world premiere by New York City Ballet's rising star Justin Peck, praised for "electrifying classical dance with [his] fresh vision" (Wall Street Journal). The program also includes a musical prelude to shine the spotlight on the nationally renowned PNB Orchestra, currently celebrating its 25th Anniversary season. Featuring works by established directors and emerging filmmakers, this showcase will present a bird's eye view of a thriving film scene. The first installment, from November 22 through December 20, 2014, will include three films: My Mother Is a Character (Minha mãe é uma peça), starring the popular theater and TV comedian Paulo Gustavo in Brazil's biggest box-office hit of 2013; Casa Grande, Fellipe Barbosa 's coming-of-age drama that has been a hit at several international film festivals; and The Music According to Antonio Carlos Jobim (A música segundo Tom Jobim), a musical tribute to the artist who popularized bossa nova, by Cinema Novo pioneer Nelson Pereira dos Santos. The Chicago Sinfoniettacaptures the duality of grief and Joy intrinsic to the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead in its annual Dia de los Muertosconcert, where the orchestra is joined by Brazil-born, Chicago area-based guest conductor Lucia Matos, making her Sinfonietta podium debut, and Redmoon theater, bringing the music to life through spectacular visual accompaniments. The Chicago Sinfonietta performs Dia de los Muertos twice: first, in Naperville at Wentz Concert Hall of North Central College, 171 E.
