BWW Review: HAIRSPRAY LIVE! Serves as a Joyful, Optimistic Reminder of a Powerful Message
by Matt Tamanini - Dec 8, 2016

There is one undeniable quality that HAIRSPRAY has retained as it has journeyed from the big screen to the stage, back to the big screen, and now to the small. The infectious excitement and optimism that Tracy Turnblad sings with in the opening number, 'Good Morning Baltimore,' is one of the most magical and important gifts that the musical theatre has given in recent decades. From the moment that the original musical burst onto Broadway in 2002, it has been a literal and figurative rainbow of Joy and happiness, and fortunately for the show's legions of fans, directed by Tony-winner Kenny Leon, NBC's live adaptation has maintained every delightful ounce of the musical's giddy goodness. BWW Album Review: Happiness Is...YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN
by Remy Holzer - Dec 6, 2016

Whether or not you are familiar with Clark Gesner's musical YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN, you are bound to recognize Track 21 of the York Theatre Company 2016 Off-Broadway Cast Recording. The theme 'Linus and Lucy,' written by Vince Guaraldi, is a familiar tune to all who have seen the well-known animated specials featuring the Peanuts kids. There is something oddly soothing about this gentle, understated theme, with its rolling feeling of continuity paired with plinking notes of whimsy, that has become so closely associated with Charles M. Schulz's legacy of 17,897 comic strips. The YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN band played 'Linus and Lucy' as walking-out music after the show, prompting much of the audience to stay and hear it through to the end. (more...)

BWW Review: SUMMER RAIN is Simply Charming Home-Grown Musical at New Theatre
by Brodie Paparella - Dec 5, 2016

It is a wonderful time of year to be reminded of the romanticism inherent in the Australian outback; a topic more frequently explored of late for links to our history, our current social climate and our connection as a nation. Summer Rain is the work of two Australian theatrical legends, Nick Enright and Terence Clark. Summer Rain is no Boy from Oz, but this production is undeniably charming, a quintessential musical, and a wonderful ode to Australia's natural treasures. Debuting as director, Trent Kidd has shown great skill with stagecraft and character development, alongside his clear choreography talents which truly thrive in Summer Rain. (more...)

BWW Recap:WESTWORLD Proves that Violent Delights Truly Have Violent Ends in its Mindblowing Finale
by Jessica Naftaly - Dec 5, 2016

The final episode of the premiere season of Westworld, “The Bicameral Mind,” was bittersweet, sentimental, violent, satisfying, and only benefits from a repeat viewing or two. With everything riding on the finale and the show's massively built up audience praying for a finale that would live up tot he rest of the season's carefully and deftly crafted episodes, WESTWORLD didn't disappoint. Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan proved that they had hit on something truly special and are focused on a narrative deeper and more thoughtful than the majority of shows currently and previously reaching the top of the ratings. WESTWORLD's finale only cemented the show's narrative theme of autonomy, storytelling and subverting the traditional tropes of stories, as well as it's ultimate deconstruction of archetypes through our ultimate lenses; Maeve and Dolores.  (more...)

BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL at Hartford Stage
by Joseph Harrison - Dec 5, 2016

It's a story most of us have heard or witnessed before. Crotchety and greedy old Ebenezer Scrooge, complaining about the poor, turning down the invitation of his nephew to Christmas dinner, and begrudgingly giving Bob Cratchit the day off for Christmas. We fondly remember past portrayals of Scrooge face to face with the ghost of his ex-partner Jacob Marley, flying through the past and present with amiable spirits and having a change of heart after coming face to face with his own death. At Hartford Stage this season, the story comes to life with renewed excitement and Joy in the form of A CHRISTMAS CAROL - A GHOST STORY OF CHRISTMAS. The classic story by Charles Dickens and as adapted and originally directed by Michael Wilson is an annual tradition for Hartford Stage, but one that will be not be the same after this year's production.
