BWW Exclusive: Dame Judi Dench Discusses Shakespeare, Her Passion, CATS, Potential Broadway Return
by Matt Tamanini - May 27, 2016

Only some are able to ever identify their specific passion, far fewer are able to achieve, and only a select handful are able to make their passion their life's work; Judi Dench is one of those few. When I asked her why, despite a career spanning more than five and a half decades, and nearly every major acting award the world over, she continues to return to the plays of William Shakespeare, in a tone exceedingly gentle, yet slightly dismayed that the question need even be asked, she said, 'Cause that's my passion, Matt.' BWW Review: MARJANI FORTE-SAUNDERS Combines Nightmarish Images To Little Effect in being Here.../this time
by Juan Michael Porter II - May 26, 2016

Ms. Forte-Saunders has created an evening of misery that blocks any discourse beyond the bleak. If her intent was to wield art as a blunt instrument with which to hammer home her point, then she has certainly succeeded. The tragedy therein is that she could have done much more. Hers is a ferocious intellect that charges unswervingly towards what is distressing. While I admire her forcefulness, I wonder if she has confused strength for bravery. (more...)

BWW Review: AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE's 'La Fille mal gardée' Revives The Spirits With Bucolic Charm
by Juan Michael Porter II - May 26, 2016

'La Fille mal gardee', Frederick Ashton has given us folksy innocence, clever games, and sunny smiles. That smile was perfectly embodied by soloist Jeffrey Cirio, making a splendid debut as Colas in the opening performance of this life affirming ballet. He is more than ably assisted by a cast of tremendous artists who give of themselves completely to making these simple country characters sparkle. And what characters! With an opening danced by five chickens -- four hens and one manic rooster -- how could it be otherwise? (more...)

BWW Review: Rocking Out to the Life of Johnny Cash with RING OF FIRE at CCTC
by Kristen Morale - May 25, 2016

The Cape Cod Theatre Company, home of the Harwich Junior Theatre, has decided to step away traditional staged storytelling and try something different with its newest "jukebox" production of Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash. Created by Richard Maltby, Jr and hereby directed and choreographed by Pamela C. Wills, with Nina K. Schuessler serving as Producing Artistic Director, Ring of Fire is a story within and through a performance, and this production has the unique ability to depict the lives of Johnny Cash and June Carter, complete with interchangeable characters and interspersed moments of chronological storytelling, in a way I could image they would have approved of themselves: simple, straightforward and even stark (how fitting that word is) in its presentation but so oddly appropriate for the unadorned but deeply affecting way Cash's music hits you. Those on stage are not "acting" to portray these music legends, but instead almost seem to hand themselves over to the audience's belief that this is not a presentation or something that is purely meant to entertain; they are there to tell a story, and with a wonderfully eclectic mix of songs played in the background, there is something so beautiful in the rawness of this entire production. At one point during her new one-woman play IN THE BODY OF THE WORLD, based on her highly acclaimed 2013 memoir of the same name, Eve Ensler repeats a phrase over and over to one of her doctors: "You're going to radiate my vagina. BWW Review: Seize the Stage! Rousing NEWSIES Leaps Over to OC's Segerstrom Center

Now after more than a year, NEWSIES' North American First National Tour is nearing its conclusion, finally stopping at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through May 29 (the musical will motor down to San Diego the following week). After seeing the original Broadway production in NYC and then seeing its Los Angeles debut at the Pantages Theatre last year, experiencing this exuberant, high-energy, smile-inducing crowd-pleaser again here in my own home turf felt like a special gift. NEWSIES is a fun, uplifting night at the theater... and continues to be in subsequent, multiple viewings. With its winning combination of incredibly acrobatic dancing, family-friendly comedy, engaging story, awesome singing, and dazzling showmanship, there is a lot to love with this show---whether you're 5 or 95.
