BWW Review: Three's Company in Garden Theatre's BOEING BOEINGBWW Review: Three's Company in Garden Theatre's BOEING BOEING
by Matt Tamanini - Mar 31, 2015

There is a lot wrong with the central conceit of Marc Camoletti's farce BOEING BOEING, playing at the Garden Theatre through April 4th. Set in Paris in 1963, Bernard, an insatiable womanizer (likely with undiagnosed obsessive compulsive disorder) has figured out that the best way to reap the benefits of having three live-in fiancees without any of them knowing about each other is to only propose to flight attendants on conflicting schedules. From there, the jokes nearly write themselves as schedules change and weather delays departures. Directed by Keith Smith, the Garden Theatre's six-person cast bounces through the madcap comedy with an abundant Joy, despite all of the outdated gender politics. BOEING BOEING, translated from the original French by Beverley Cross and Francis Evans, stands up well as a time-capsule from a different time with a different perspective, and if you can get past the show's uncomfortable premise, you are sure to enJoy its charming cast and taut direction. BWW Reviews: JESSICA LANG DANCE Mixes Movement with Graphic ElementsBWW Reviews: JESSICA LANG DANCE Mixes Movement with Graphic Elements
by Frances Steiner - Mar 30, 2015

Although Jessica Lang Dance was founded in 2011, Artistic Director Jessica Lang is no newcomer to the dance scene. Lang, a disciple of Twyla Tharp, is on the faculty of American Ballet Theatre's Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School and has been an active choreographer since 1999. Lang's signature style marries classical movements with a "striking design element." This theme played out through Jessica Lang Dance's performance at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium, an evening co-presented with Washington Performing Arts and City Dance. The graphic component in particular was inconsistent throughout the evening and did not always further Lang's artistic vision. (more...)

Pacific Symphony's Family Musical Mornings to Conclude with BEETHOVEN LIVES UPSTAIRS, 4/18Pacific Symphony's Family Musical Mornings to Conclude with BEETHOVEN LIVES UPSTAIRS, 4/18
by BWW News Desk - Mar 30, 2015

Orange County, Calif.—March 31, 2015—Pacific Symphony invites its Family Musical Mornings audience to imagine what it would be like to live next door to one of the most-famous composers of all time during “Beethoven Lives Upstairs,” the award-winning production by Classical Kids Live. Weaving masterful music and true stories from Beethoven's life into a dramatic tale, the concert tells the story of a young boy from Vienna named Christoph (Will J. Green), whose new neighbor is the one-and-only Beethoven. Through a lively exchange of letters with his uncle (Thad Avery), where their subject is the “madman” who lives upstairs, Christoph comes to understand Beethoven's gift, the beauty of his music and the torment of his deafness. With more than 20 excerpts packed into a 50-minute concert, the performance sweeps kids away with Beethoven's beautiful music. Led by Assistant Conductor Alejandro Gutiérrez, the Symphony performs favorites including “Moonlight Sonata,” “Für Elise” and the world-famous Symphony No. 5 with the “da-da-da-dun” theme. Directed by Paul Pement, the adaptation of Barbara Nichol's acclaimed novel leaves the audience appreciating the genius of Beethoven and the diversity of his music from the big dramatic sounds to the sweet romantic melodies. BWW Reviews: Above the Fold! Pulsating NEWSIES Storms the PantagesBWW Reviews: Above the Fold! Pulsating NEWSIES Storms the Pantages
by Don Grigware - Mar 28, 2015

In 1899 droves of newsboys from every borough of New York City banned together and went on strike against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other wealthy newspaper owners, in a crusade to save children from menial wages and physical abuse. This was a first, where uneducated street kids stood up to the big suits and won. In 1992 Disney created the movie Newsies that went on to become a humongous hit. In 2012 Harvey Fierstein, Alan Menken and Jack Feldman came to Broadway with a musical show they created based on the film. Under the Disney banner, the first national tour of Newsies is currently onstage at the Pantages. All I can say is run, don't walk, to purchase tickets. The Newsies ensemble pulsates from the moment the lights hit the stage. It will jolt you, fulfill you and make you jump for Joy. (more...)
