BWW Review: CityRep Has An Incandescent Hit On Their Hands with MR. BURNS, A POST-ELECTRIC PLAY
by Ronn Burton - Mar 2, 2017

Last weekend, CityRep opened MR. BURNS, A POST-ELECTRIC PLAY at the downtown Civic Center. A co-production with Oklahoma City University, featuring up-and-coming student artists and professional Equity actors on equal footing, the CityRep production of Anne Washburn's delightfully unconventional script is one of my favorite shows the company has produced in recent memory. CityRep has a hit on their hands. I hope the lack of familiarity with the title doesn't discourage audience attendance-this play is one of the most-produced in regional theaters around the country this season, and for good reason. The only drawback is that the play is only around for one more weekend. I applaud CityRep and OCU for introducing such thought-provoking art to the Heartland, and hope you, dear reader, flock to the theater in droves to experience the magic. (more...)

BWW Review: Broken Box Mime Theater Highlights the Joys of Subversion in SEE REVERSE
by Victoria Ordin - Feb 27, 2017

These are deep philosophical waters but important to understanding the work of Broken Box Mime Theater, whose mission is threefold: 1) 'To activate the imagination of audiences,' 2) 'to contemporize the art of mime,' and 3) 'to remind us all of the power of simple storytelling.' SEE REVERSE consists of ten individual pieces, some of which include some combination of eight enormously talented performers with backgrounds ranging from theater to opera to poetry: Nick Abdeel, Becky Baumwoll, Duane Cooper, Geraldine Dulex, Blake Habermann, David Jenkins, Marissa Molnar, and Matt Zambrano. Surprisingly, not one has formal dance training, which makes the precision of their physical movement all the more remarkable.  (more...)

BWW Review: DARK SISTERS at Oklahoma City University Introduces Contemporary, Progressive Opera to the Heartland
by Ronn Burton - Feb 25, 2017

Oklahoma City University's Bass School of Music presented the 2011 opera DARK SISTERS by Nico Muhly and Stephen Karam. Telling the story of "sister wives" in a modern-day polygamist sect, the subject matter certainly breaks new ground in an art form that many would (mistakenly) view as outdated. By presenting this kind of work in Oklahoma City, OCU proves their commitment to prepare students for work in today's artistic landscape, ensuring their readiness for the future beyond graduation. SMALL TOWN ROADS is Released
by BWW News Desk - Feb 23, 2017

In L. B. Johnson's new book, Small Town Roads ($14.99, paperback, 9781498490719, $7.99, eBook, 9781498490726) two women, one a young police officer from a major urban area, and another, an elderly retired teacher living in a tiny rural farm town, become unexpected neighbors and unlikely friends. When an act of violence draws them together, that friendship becomes a testament to God's faith, a healing balm for grief, and hope for a future that is not always clear. In the tradition of Kent Harauf's bestselling Plainsong, L.B. Johnson has written a lyrical, meditative story that acknowledges the dangers and comforts of our world. Small Town Roads is a loving story about an old, slow place where the terrible loneliness of grief eases because ordinary people decide to be community. With this, her first fiction novel after two #1 best best-selling Memoirs, she reveals a writer that can be enjoyed today as well as looked for tomorrow. (more...)
