American tenor Jay Hunter Morris will replace Anthony Dean Griffey in Houston Grand Opera's world premiere production of A Christmas Carol, it was announced today by HGO Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers. Mr. Griffey has withdrawn for health reasons. The 90-minute opera, commissioned by HGO from composer Iain Bell and librettist Simon Callow, is written for a single singer performing the role of The Narrator. A Christmas Carol runs from December 5 through 21, 2014, at the Wortham Theater Center, and is suitable for ages 12 and up. (more...)

Conductor James Conlon leads a rare revival of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Metropolitan Opera in six performances beginning Monday, November 10, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. The cast for Graham Vick's production includes soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek in the title role as Katerina Ismailova, tenor Brandon Jovanovich as Sergei, tenor Raymond Very as Zinovy Ismailov, and baritone Anatoli Kotscherga as Boris Ismailov. Tenor Frank van Aken sings the role of Sergei in the November 21 performance. (more...)

After a troubled childhood, Jane Eyre searches for new purpose as a governess at Thornfield Hall. Greenwich Village mainstay Dialogue with Three Chords (D3C) continues their fourth year of staging original plays by teaming with Stable Cable Lab Co. to present 'Theatre of Hauntology,' "a night of Ghosts, bad dreams, and the enduring terror of history," according to D3C playwright Stephen Gracia. The night will feature three original plays, live music from Tommy Lombardozzi, a spooky tale from storyteller Rose Bonczek and a raffle with spooky prizes. It's that time of year when we all start to thirst for spooky tale or a good blood-curdling scream. The Players Theatre Short Play and Musical Festival encourage playwrights to dig into their dark crevices by offering an annual horror-themed festival each October. Celebrating its 4th year, "Boo!" runs through October 26 for three weeks. Each week four original short plays, by four separate playwrights will be presented and a "Best of the Week" production will be selected by judge and audience vote. (more...)
