BWW Review: Scottsdale Musical Theater Company Presents KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN
by Herbert Paine - May 27, 2016

With its array of accolades ~ novel, film, and musical ~ and the richness of its themes and content, KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN is a treasure trove of possibility, to be mined deeply and imaginatively for its allusions to the mythology of the spider woman, cinema, and revolution. On these varied accounts, Scottsdale Musical Theater Company's current stab at the KISS falls short. The multi-talented Hector Coris directs this ambitious production, but I fear that limited resources have roadblocked him from realizing the production's full potential. (more...)

BWW Review: Fantastic Z's PSYCHO BEACH PARTY Provides Hot Kitschy Hilarity
by Jay Irwin - May 27, 2016

I'll admit I'm quite picky and protective about the works of Charles Busch. He's one of my favorite authors with his brilliant ability to tell a well thought out story through the kitschy lens of 40's, 50's and 60's pop culture. I've been fortunate enough to see the master himself perform his own works three times. I've only ever seen a local production attempt one of his works once before (a dreadful bastardization of “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom” that need never be mentioned again). So when I heard that Fantastic Z was performing his most well known work, “Psycho Beach Party” AND it was opening on my birthday I thought this could either be a wonderful thing or the universe playing a cruel joke. Well lucky for me (and for all of you) the folks at Fantastic Z and director Kyle Baiz must have as much love and respect for the piece as I do as they managed a fun and frothy, pitch perfect production. On January 3, 2016, Ross Petty made his final fiendish appearance as Captain Hook before descending beneath the stage of the Elgin Theatre through Mr. Dressup's Tickle Trunk, never to be seen again. Despite his love of being booed by thousands of theatre goers every night at his annual fractured fairytale, escaping 20 years of heckling was a joyous and momentous occasion for the serial villain. BWW Review: Charming and Delightful, THE HEIDI CHRONICLES is Still Timid

Soulpepper's latest production of Wendy Wasserstein's 1989 play, THE HEIDI CHRONICLES explores the changing role of women in society through the coming-of-age story of a woman named - you guessed it, Heidi. The production features a series of episodic scenes throughout Heidi's life; from an awkward high school dance, to a career-focused driven woman and all the messy things in between. Michelle Monteith stars in the title role and goes on a transformative journey with a supporting cast of Soulpepper staples including Raquel Duffy, Sarah Wilson, Damien Atkins and Jordan Pettle.
