BWW Reviews: Standing Room Only Productions' YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is Frothy, Fun Entertainment
by David Clarke - Oct 4, 2013

After the success of THE PRODUCERS, Mel Brooks gave YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN the Broadway treatment. The ribald musical comedy had it's pre-Broadway try out at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, Washington. It began previews on Broadway on October 11, 2007 and opened at the Foxwoods Theatre (then named the Hilton Theatre) on November 8. The show closed after 485 performances on January 4, 2009. The production launched two national tours, with the Second National Tour closing on May 31, 2012. Rights to the musical became available to regional theaters shortly thereafter, and many ballsy theatre companies are gladly taking on the ambitious project. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Seattle Shakes MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING Combines Humor and Jazz
by Jay Irwin - Oct 28, 2013

OK, so I've seen it several times. I mean there are the movies plus countless productions About Town. It's done a lot as it's one of Shakespeare's more accessible plays with its quick wit and very clear heroes and villains (one hero is even called Hero). But that doesn't mean I don't still love it. I always tend to find something new and appealing in most productions of what has become my favorite of his canon. And the current production of 'Much Ado About Nothing' from Seattle Shakespeare Company is no exception as they have tapped into much of the comedy of the piece as well as infused it with some wonderful jazz renditions of the Shakespearean songs from the piece. The British Museum Presents DRESSED TO IMPRESS: NETSUKE AND JAPANESE MEN'S FASHION, 6/19-8/17
by BWW News Desk - Jun 19, 2014

This Asahi Shimbun Display features a selection of five delightfully detailed netsuke and other traditional Japanese male accessories from the British Museum's collection. During the early 1700s Edo (present-day Tokyo) was one of the largest cities in the world and its merchant population grew increasingly wealthy. In the social hierarchy of Edo- period Japan (1615–1868), however, merchants occupied the lowest class; below samurai warriors, farmers and craftsman. Restricted by government laws regulating their clothing, allowing them only to wear dark silk or cotton with simple patterns, merchants instead displayed their wealth and taste through the latest fashion accessories. Netsuke (pronounced net-ske?) were well suited to this purpose, as they were functional objects as well as fashion statements. These intricately carved toggles were used to hang personal objects (sagemono) from a sash (obi) tied around a kimono, very useful as these traditional robes had no pockets.' They could be concealed beneath the folds of a man's kimono thus allowing the wearer to subtly express their personality and prosperity. In this way, men participated in fashionable Edo life with both flair and discretion. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Tour De Force Fabulous French Farce THE GAMESTER at Theatre 40

The setting is Paris in the 18th Century with THE GAMESTER performed in rhymed couplets. But don't let the timeframe, language or fabulous costumes fool you. BWW Reviews: Theatreworks' THE WEIR Serves Up Guinness and Ghost Stories
by Christi Esterle - Jan 24, 2014

Conor McPherson's The Weir is all about the atmosphere, and Theatreworks certainly has it. Scenic designer Jonathan Wentz has built a cozy rural Irish pub with mismatched chairs, a turf fire, and Guinness on tap. The floorboards of the stage come right up to the front row of seats; you feel like you could walk right up to the bar and order yourself a pint (in fact, the audience is invited to do just that at the performance's conclusion). This is a small-town watering hole, a place where everybody knows everybody's business and men fresh from a hard day's work gossip like old ladies over beer and whiskey. (more...)
