Getting to Know...JEREMY BENTON Again After His Astaire Award NominationGetting to Know...JEREMY BENTON Again After His Astaire Award Nomination
by Jeffrey Ellis - May 3, 2016

Hard to believe, but it's been four years since we sat down with Jeremy Benton, whom we've since referred to as Broadway's Best Tap Dancer every chance we've had, and now it seems as that title has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Just yesterday, Benton - a native of Springfield, Tennessee - was honored with a nomination for a Fred and Adele Astaire Award in the category for best off-Broadway male dancer, heralding his critically acclaimed role in Cagney, the Musical. Over the last couple seasons here at the Stratford Festival, I have become very good friends with two members of our company. Alexandra (Alex) Herzog and Gabriel (Gabe) Antonacci. If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you are probably aware that Alex and I, and her cat, (Mogli) are currently in year two of being roommates. Gabe, on the other hand, is one of my best friends and while we were Pinball Lads 1 & 2 in The Who's Tommy here in 2013, he claimed status as my 'Show-Boyfriend' (even though he's married to his beautiful wife Robin.) Sterling Masters hails from Charlotte, NC and is currently appearing in Wicked on Broadway. Long before she made her Broadway debut in the show she grew up dancing in her mom's dance studio. She competed in dance competitions and still holds the record for being the first and only dancer to hold all four titles for Carolina Dance Masters. After a brief stint at Florida State, Sterling was cast in the national tour of Fosse and never looked back. She went on to perform (and dance captain) national tours of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Wicked, to name a few. (more...)

Road to Opening Week 10: Matt Armet on 5 Weeks to A CHORUS LINE at StratfordRoad to Opening Week 10: Matt Armet on 5 Weeks to A CHORUS LINE at Stratford
by Guest Blogger: Matt Armet - Apr 25, 2016

Last Saturday was arguably one of the toughest days of rehearsal all year. We started our day with a really great second dress run of the show which started at 1:45PM. This last dress rehearsal was almost as busy out in the house as it was for us on stage. We still had all of the production tables in the centre of the house for sound, lighting, and our director. Then we added an invited audience of roughly 500 people, about four video cameras for b-roll footage, plus two roaming photographers taking still shots. It was wonderful! The excitement before the show was high. It was very exciting to finally have an audience to find out if jokes would land and where we might have to hold longer for applause. The audience was mainly made up of friends of the cast and friends of the Festival. So the true test came on Tuesday when we had our first preview audience. (more...)

by Alix Cohen - Apr 22, 2016

Ninety percent of the way through her new 54 Below show, A Visit With Kander and Ebb, Donna McKechnie delivers the unquestioned highlight of this show, “I Walk Away” (The Visit), wherein the character Claire Zachanassian ruefully explains how she accrued her fortune through the deaths of successive husbands. Phrasing is superb, vocal confident, acting strong. Unfortunately, while the show's finale “Yes!” (70, Girls, 70) is appealing for vivacity and notable lack of pretense, nothing else comes close to this satisfying parenthesis. (more...)

The train is going at full steam now and there is really no slowing it down until after Opening Night. This week has been full of a lot of fun things. First off we had out Sitz Probe on stage which was amazing! Finally getting to dance and sing these numbers full out with the orchestra was incredible. Then we moved into our Tech Run on Tuesday. Tech run: A full run through of the show with all technical elements including lights, sounds, sets, even show shoes and props, just no costumes yet. During Cue to Cue week, we break the show down into pieces a lot, not focusing on the arc of the show. So it was so great to have a really solid Tech Run of the show. (more...)

In the process, he invites us to fall in love with the art form all over again by showing us how musicals happen, what makes them work, how they captivate audiences, and how one landmark show leads to the next-by design or by accident, by emulation or by rebellion from OKLAHOMA! to HAMILTON and onward.
