In 1970, Michael Frayn, the English playwright who would go on to write NOISES OFF, was standing backstage in the Wings watching a performance of another farce he had written, "The Two of Us." Of this performance, he said, 'It was funnier from behind than in front, and I thought that one day I must write a farce from behind.' By the late 70s, Frayn had taken a crack at the concept with a short-lived one-act play called "Exits" before fleshing out and expanding the piece into the hilarious three-act NOISES OFF, now brilliantly staged at the Morgan-Wixson in Santa Monica. John Steinbeck published the epic Of Mice and Men in 1937. It was an instant success and in the same year, the novel was picked up by George S Kaufman who immediately bought the stage rights. Steinbeck and Kaufman worked together to create the stage play and it was soon on Broadway where it played for a very respectable 207 performances. It also won the New York Drama Critics Circle award for 'Best Play' in 1938. Shortly after this, Of Mice and Men opened at London's Gate Theatre and the rest is history. (more...)

Far and away the highlight on opening night of the Pacific Northwest Ballet's five-day return engagement at NYC's Joyce on October 8th 2014 was the soul-stirring and remarkably supple performance by Carla Korbes. The ballerina, who will retire at the end of the 2014-2015 season, is a mere 33 years old. Watching her dance with Jerome Tisserand in a preview of Justin Peck's "Debonair" to an alternately playful and poignant score by George Anthell was pure delight. A legal adventure set in Bombay, the novel takes the reader through a gripping tale of film production, piracy and pillage. Unwittingly drawn into a violent war between producers and pirates, Arjun, a young, blind lawyer, goes on a wild pirate chase in Bombay, the city of dreams. Film producers, record labels, and software companies have been grappling with copyright piracy for a very long time. Several research studies have concluded that losses from piracy to various creative industries are in billions of dollars. A recent study of he Indian Chamber of Commerce estimates losses from piracy in India to be more than a billion dollars. Many scholars have also established strong linkages between piracy, terrorism and organized crime. In this backdrop, Dr. Kalyan's "Pirates of Bollywood," fictionalizes and dramaticizes the ongoing war between producers, pirates and police. Arjun, the protagonist from Dr. Kalyan's first work, Road Humps and Sidewalks, a drug patent thriller, gets drawn into a fierce war between producers and pirates, spurring him to unravel the pirate puzzle. The novel is the first of its kind in the legal fiction genre. Talking about his second novel, Dr. Kalyan said, "Piracy is a way of life in India. John Patrick Shanley's (Moonstruck, Doubt) recent Broadway hit, a nominee for the Tony Award for Best Play, will trod the boards in New Brunswick opening tonight, October 10. Joining Ellen McLaughlin in the cast will be John Bolger, Patricia Conollyand David Schramm. Mr. Saint will helm the production, which runs through November 2. This contemporary dramedy center's on a newly married interacial, upwardly mobile couple who's seemingly idyllic life is shattered by a shocking incident. Along with another couple, the unexpected incident forces them to explore issues of trust, failed expectations, jealousy, race and the true nature of their love. This production is also the New York stage debut of Sean Avery, former NHL star, New York Ranger and LGBT advocate. A major exhibition of significant works, many of which are from the Zimmerli's Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection of Nonconformist Art from the Soviet Union, comprise the first museum exhibition of the art of this seminal global figure since his death in 2013. The 83 works in the exhibition include loans from private collections in the United States that have only rarely been publically exhibited. Oleg Vassiliev: Space and Light will be on view at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers through December 31, 2014 and is accompanied by a major catalogue, which will be released in November. The show has been organized by Julia Tulovsky, Ph.D., Associate Curator of Russian and Nonconformist Art, at the Zimmerli, who also served as general editor of the publication. It contains essays by Tulovsky, Molly Brunson, Andrew Solomon, and Robert Storr, as well as documentation on the artist's career, a chronology, and full-color illustrations of all the works in the exhibition.
