Slipstream Theatre Initiative proudly treads new waters with its sixth season; fusing classic characters and themes with current plays and playwrights. The company's 6-show season expands on their founding mission of creating classical work for a contemporary minded audience by presenting some Michigan Premieres, a World Premiere by Maxim Vinogradov, and a couple other surprises, all focusing on classic stories or characters. 

Their May 8 concert, From Song Came Symphony, will explore the symphonic influence of composer Harry T. Burleigh, whose legacy is often tied to the concertization of the American spiritual. He is also increasingly credited as influencing some of the spiritual-inspired thematic material for the 'New World Symphony' and 'American String Quartet' of Antonin Dvorak. The Burleigh Society, which advances studies of black art music through scholarship and performance, hopes to broaden audiences' understanding of Burleigh's foundational contributions to American classical music.

In an elegant stage presentation of the award winning Evita, Lyric Arts on the Main Street Stage delivered a theatrical jewel to their audiences this past weekend. Andrew Lloyd Webber's music and Tim Rice's book and lyrics garnered Drama Desk and Tony Awards to became the first British musical to win the prestigious award of Best Musical in 1979. Inspiration for the production came from Mary Martin's biography 'Evita: The Women with the Whip' and forged the basis for the Webber/Rice collaboration with contemporary themes that resonate in the 21st century. Political upheaval in South America and other world regimes rock the globe in current news headlines, where revisiting Evita gives audiences a forum to contemplate these cultural concerns.

The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and Louis Armstrong House Museum (LAHM) today announced that the City has allocated $1.9 million in new capital funding for LAHM to support the renovation of Selma's House, an integral part of the expanding Louis Armstrong cultural center campus in Corona. This brings total City investment in the renovation of Selma's House to $3.53 million. Now fully funded, the project will enable the restoration and renovation of the historic house of Selma Heraldo, long-time neighbor and close friend of Louis and Lucille Armstrong. Selma's House, as it is commonly called, is located next to the Louis Armstrong House, a National and NYC Landmark.

Sounds and Sorcery celebrating Disney FANTASIA, the ground-breaking hit show inspired by the 1940 Disney animation must end its strictly limited London run on 30 September. The Vaults' latest immersive show has been casting a spell over audiences this summer with its unique installations, theatrical performances and technical wizardry bringing to life the world's most iconic classical music in a modern reimagining of Fantasia.

The Walnut Theater opens its 210th season with HOLIDAY INN with music by America's songwriter, Irving Berlin. One is invariably impressed by the institution's lavish sets (Robert Andrew Kovach) and the quality and attention to detail of their entire Creative Crew.

Bergen County Players (BCP), one of America's longest-running little theater companies, is proud to open its 86th season with the Tony Award-winning musical, The Mystery of Edwin Drood.   With Book, Music and Lyrics written by Rupert Holmes, The Mystery of Edwin Drood is based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens. CSO Music Director Rossen Milanov and the Columbus Symphony open the 2018-19 Masterworks season with a concert inspired by the 1940 Disney classic, Fantasia. Bach's majestic music, as seen through the eyes of legendary conductor Stokowski, and Wagner's terrifying "Ride of the Valkyries" are paired with the rich orchestral palettes of Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Strauss' iconic Also Sprach Zarathustra, made famous by the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In their latest production inspired by the ground-breaking 1940 Disney animation, The Vaults presents a reimagining of the many worlds of Fantasia featuring a Grecian Disco Palace, pre-historic volcanic wasteland, mirrored waterfall, human fishtank, and mystical forest among the sights. The production runs at the Vaults beneath Waterloo until 30 September.

Stage and screen star, Patricia Morison died today at the age of 103 at home in Los Angeles of natural causes. A stage icon and legend best known for her starring roles in Cole Porter's Kiss Me Kate and The King & I opposite Yul Brynner, she established an indelible mark in films with a reputation as a the villainous femme fatale with large blue eyes and extremely long, dark hair that made her a favorite of studios and fans alike.
