The 2020 Philip K. Dick Science Fiction Film Festival has announced the award winners for its eighth annual event which featured a lineup of screenings, premieres, panels, virtual reality demonstrations, and the launch of a new screenplay competition held in honor of acclaimed novelist Philip K. Dick. The festival was held from March 4-8, 2020 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, NY and recognized nine films and three screenplays for their outstanding filmmaking and storytelling.

New Repertory Theatre dusts off an old chestnut for a family-friendly, non-holiday, crowd-pleasing offering as their gift for the season. Lionel Bart's OLIVER!, based on Charles Dickens' novel OLIVER TWIST, is known to be a little dark, with its themes of orphans, child exploitation, and vast income inequality (sound familiar?), but in the hands of New Rep's new Artistic Director, Michael J. Bobbitt, the darkness is lightened up with jaunty performances, a smattering of silly antics, and a set design (Luciana Stecconi) that skews to the cartoonish. With almost a dozen capable adults anchoring the cast, the seven children of all ages are given free rein to behave like children, albeit amazingly talented and spirited ones.

This spring through summer the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) presents Burning Bright: New French Filmmakers as part of its popular CinéSalon series. In what has become an annual highlight of the FIAF calendar, the 2019 edition of Burning Bright showcases recent noteworthy films by nine exciting young filmmakers. The screenings include seven US and NY premieres with introductions by figures from the film industry, as well as appearances from directors. The Jeff Awards meeting on Monday, January 28, 2019 at the Greenhouse Theatre will include a panel discussion on Latinx Theatre. Latinx Theater groups have been forming across the country in the past 10 years. These groups are dedicated to education, advocacy and community amongst Latinx performers. In Chicago, one of the most visible of these groups is ALTA (The Alliance of Latinx Theater Artists of Chicago).
