The League of American Orchestras announced today that Simon Woods, a highly experienced and forward-looking leader in the orchestral field, has been named President and CEO of the League, effective September 1, 2020.

One of my favorite interviews, is also one of the rarest, which is a two part sit down with three-time Tony Award recipient, Bernadette Peters. After a six-year hiatus, John Vanderslice has returned with his highly anticipated new album The Cedars, out today on Native Cat Recordings. Vanderslice dedicated the past few years working in his renowned Bay Area studio Tiny Telephone, where artists like Death Cab For Cutie, Sleater-Kinney, and Spoon have recorded, but then returned to songwriting, pouring out an emotional series of songs about his despair over his mother's death, his complicated relationship with drugs, and his nostalgia for a pre-tech boom San Francisco. John Vanderslice's anticipated new album The Cedars is out next week, and today the renowned producer/songwriter shared an advance stream of the full record with The Fader. Vanderslice also gave a revealing interview with the magazine, speaking of his childhood in rural Florida, his despair over his mother's death, his disillusionment with San Francisco, and his relationship with drugs. 'There's stuff on the record that I'm talking about very transparently because I want everyone to know what's happening with me,' he says. 'It's like a bleak, dark, beautiful Christmas card.'

The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia presents the dazzling multimedia work No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks on February 24, 2019, at 7pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall as part of the Beyond Words series. The late poet was a radical and disruptive presence within the national literary scene, becoming the first African-American to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1950. In this ambitious creation, innovative art-collective Manual Cinema collaborates with Chicago-based poets Eve L. Ewing and Nate Marshall to craft an inspiring biographical narrative, featuring a live six-piece band and original score by Jamila Woods and Ayanna Woods.

Composer Heidi Rodewald, known for her collaborations with Stew on Passing Strange and The Total Bent, strikes out on her own in The Good Swimmer, a "pop requiem" that addresses issues of war, heroism, sacrifice, loss, and idealism. The moody, multi-layered song-cycle for guitar, bass, piano, trumpet, woodwinds, strings, drums, and vocals is performed by a nine-piece band led by singer David Driver. Set in the early days of the Vietnam War among a group of lifeguards, Donna Di Novelli's lyrics are a radical recontextualization of found texts, including a defunct lifesaving manual. A cast of young singers in their teens and early 20s at the start of their professional careers-Jeremy Weiss, Sophia Byrd, Naseer Sleets, Joey LaPlante, Luke Bob Robinson, Papa Holt, and Kennedy Kanagawa-vividly conveys the sense of young people being thrust into a historical moment they have no control of. Their shattering experience brings the audience to a galvanizing realization: we truly honor our fallen soldiers only when we defy the political drumbeat of a senseless war.
