BWW Review: The MUNY'S Spectacular 42ND STREET
by Chris Gibson - Jul 9, 2016

If you missed The Muny's production of 42nd Street, you missed a show that was an absolutely perfect fit for the wide open spaces its stage presents. The original Warner Bros. 1933 pre-production code film was a blend of behind the scenes melodrama and onstage eye-candy. It gave depression era audiences a chance to escape from their worries with Lloyd Bacon's direction of the story and Busby Berkley's show-stopping musical direction. And, that's the caliber of entertainment you'll find on stage at The MUNY. It's an extravaganza that verges on pure spectacle, with that enormous canvas worked to perfection; a snappy mix of what made the movie and the Broadway version so successful. (more...)

BWW TV: BROADWAY SESSIONS Satisfies with Tributes to HAMILTON!
by Ben Cameron - Jul 11, 2016

Broadway's biggest hit said goodbye to some of it's biggest hitters this week. Hamilton bid adieu to Tony-winning star and writer Lin Manuel Miranda, Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr, Tony nominee Phillipa Soo and 'The Bullet' herself, Ariana DeBose. That's a big change for the blockbuster and has, doubtless, left several Hamilton devotees heartbroken. We figured it'd be fitting to take a look back at some Sessions performances from the Tony-winning score that has wiggled its way into our heads and playlists and won't let go (nor do we want it to). Featuring The Color Purple's Akron Watson, Elf's Paul Ianiello, Avenue Q's Imari Hardon, country-fried acoustic trio Siren, new comer Ellis Dawson and Hamilton's own Angelia standby- Alysha Deslorieux. BWW Review: 42ND STREET at Music Hall At Fair Park
by Christina Hoth - Jul 1, 2016

Awash in red velvet and gold fringe, the Music Hall at Fair Park stage appeared ready to drift back to the glory days of 1930's Broadway this week as the cast of 42nd Street moved their dancing feet to the Dallas Summer Musicals leg of their national tour. Originally produced in 1980, 42nd Street quickly became a Broadway classic winning Tony Awards¬ģ for Best Musical and Best Choreography under the direction of Gower Champion. Its revival in 2001 was equally well-received with a Tony Award¬ģ for Best Revival of a Musical. 42nd Street is the archetypal tale of a small town girl named Peggy (played by Caitlin Ehlinger) achieving her big Broadway dreams by understudying starlet Dorothy Brock (Kaitlin Lawrence) with the grace of a hotshot producer, Julian Marsh (Matthew J. Taylor). (more...)
