MARY'S WEDDING to Run 1/28-2/21 at Malibu Playhouse
by BWW News Desk - Jan 20, 2016

"Mary's Wedding" premiers January 28 - February 21, 2016 at the Malibu Playhouse, officially launching their 2016 season under the helm of Jeremy Skidmore, world-renowned theater director and formerly Artistic Director of Theater Alliance in Washington, D.C.  Written by Stephen Massicotte and performed by Hallie Cooper and Mark Jude Sullivan, "MARY'S WEDDING," produced and directed by Skidmore, is a brilliant, romantic and historical dream play. When Mary and Charlie unexpectedly find one another sheltered in a barn during a thunderstorm, a tentative love is born. But the year is 1914, and their first flirtations ignite right as World War I begins to engulf the western world.  Nevertheless, their bond begins to fracture the hard rules of time as their story unfolds across vast prairies, on the decks of silently sailing war ships, and entwined with the chaotic trenches of Europe's no-man's land.  Mary's Wedding captures an extraordinary moment of innocence and courage with rare sensitivity and beauty. Gloucester Stage Company Presents New England Premiere of THE TOTALITARIANS
by BWW News Desk - Aug 28, 2016

Gloucester Stage Company continues its 37th season of professional theater on Cape Ann with the New England premiere of Peter Sinn Nachtrieb's The Totalitarians from September 1 through September 24 at 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. Gloucester Stage Managing Director Jeff Zinn makes his Gloucester Stage directing debut with this off-the-wall-satire of the zany world of politics. Peter Sinn Nachtrieb has written a not-so-tall-tale of an oligarchic takeover led by a Palinesque Manchurian candidate, and possibly thwarted by a hapless one-man commando squad…in Nebraska? This raucous dark comedy about the state of modern political discourse, modern relationships, and how easy it is to believe truths without facts features a cast of GSC veterans Amanda Collins and Lewis D. Wheeler, and GSC newcomers Breean Julian and Alex Portenko. According to Director Zinn, "As we all watch, with our jaws dropped, the daily excesses of candidates and hear the commentators remark, 'you can't make this stuff up,' I am incredibly grateful to Peter Nachtreib for 'making stuff up' that rises to the occasion. Some may find the humor in The Totalitarians outrageous, but in this political moment I believe outrage is exactly what we need." (more...)

BWW Review: LIVING ON THE HYPHEN Hits Hard in Downtown Austin, TX
by Amy Bradley - Apr 7, 2016

LIVING ON THE HYPHEN, the creative brain-child of Leng Wong and Anu Naimpally, danced, sang and acted it's way into the prestigious Rollins Theater at The Long Center of the Performing Arts last weekend. This piece of experimental theatre presented hard-hitting questions about our cultural differences and the mysterious 'No Man's Land' of "Hyphen". Hyphen quite literally means: a punctuation mark - one used especially to divide or to compound words, word elements, or numbers. Director Leng Wong said it best, "Using the vehicle of humor and various performance art forms, I want to illuminate our commonality of being different". This difference more specifically are the words divided by a single hyphen. The opposite of "hyphen-less" or being without hyphen is slightly touched upon, but the biggest element in Wong's and Naimpally's work is the interpretation of how culturally a "hyphen" separates us, divides us and defines us. Following Leng Wong's toothbrush lady through hyphen land, we meet other characters, with or without hyphens telling their story of the experiences their hyphen has bestowed upon them. Faces change, locations change but the overall theme of the characters straddling cultural identities and the weight of their hyphen, leaves the audience wondering how to cope with these realities. Having been written and performed by the ensemble, the storyline presented many questions for the audience regarding each character. While many questions are raised, only a few were actually answered regarding the players and the biggest being left to the audience: "What is my hyphen?". (more...)
