The first ever collection of George Szell's Complete Recordings for Columbia Masterworks on 106 CDs is now available thanks to Sony Classical. The collection features symphonies, overtures and other orchestral works, concertos and chamber music, recorded from 1946 to 1969, 92 recordings remastered from the original analogue tapes using 24 bit / 192 kHz technology.

The LA Phil pays tribute to the experimental and deeply influential Fluxus movement of the 1960s and 1970s with a season-long program of performances and events at Walt Disney Concert Hall and venues throughout Los Angeles, beginning October 14, 2018. An international, anti-establishment movement whose practitioners included artists, composers, designers, and architects, as well as economists, mathematicians, ballet dancers, and others, Fluxus aimed to collapse what it considered the false wall between art and life by emphasizing artistic process over finished product. In a survey curated by American conductor and composer Christopher Rountree, in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute, the often-humorous, frequently challenging music and performances of Fluxus will be featured in a combination of concerts, symposia, and other live events, as well as surprise installations and performances throughout the 2018/19 Centennial season.

'Arizona Justice,' written and performed by Katherine Brann Fredricks, is a Michael Moore/Spalding Gray style documentary expose of corruption in Arizona, involving Senator Barry Goldwater, land fraud, water rights, the mob, money laundering and murder between the 1960's and the early 2000's. Theater for the New City's Dream Up Festival will present the play's world premiere August 26 to September 5.   Adam Chisnall directs.

“In the heyday of George Szell's tenure as its chief conductor,” declared Gramophone, “The Cleveland Orchestra had few if any peers among the world's great orchestras.” Coinciding with the orchestra's Centennial birthday in December 2018, Sony Classical is excited to announce one of the most ambitious reissue projects of recent times, a comprehensive collection of the Clevelanders' recordings made under the baton of their iconic fourth music director. These span the period between 1947 – a year after Szell inherited a rising national ensemble from Erich Leinsdorf and began transforming it into the elite ensemble it remains to this day – and 1969, a year before his sudden death shocked the musical world. Born in Budapest in 1897, Szell's dream was to create an ensemble that combined “the Americans' purity and beauty of sound and their virtuosity of execution with the European sense of tradition, warmth of expression and sense of style,” in the words of his biographer Michael Charry. That he fulfilled that dream is amply documented in the huge discography that fills Sony's new edition of 106 CDs, “recordings that are prized for their stylistic rightness, clarity of structure, rhythmic tension, and transparency of texture” (The New Yorker).

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will pay homage to the glittering world of Hollywood musicals with Mad About Musicals!, a special month of programming celebrating timeless movie musicals such as The Wizard of Oz, Singin' in the Rain and Cabaret. TCM is once again partnering with Ball State University and Canvas to offer a free online multimedia course tied to this programming special about the history of the musical genre and its evolution with cultural and technological shifts. OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network announced today its popular long-running docuseries 'Welcome to Sweetie Pie's' will premiere its fifth and final season with a special sneak preview on Tuesday, May 1 at 10 p.m. ET/PT (after Tyler Perry's 'The Haves and The Have Nots'). The series about the drama that comes with running a family-operated soul food empire, will continue in its regular time slot on Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT beginning Saturday, May 5.
