by BWW News Desk - Sep 8, 2012

Bayou City Concert Musicals kicks off its 2012-13 season with a fully-staged concert version of the classic musical, One Touch of Venus, for five performances at the Heinen Theatre, 3517 Austin, September 6-9, 2012. That's a sad oversight BCCM will correct in September." (more...)

Acclaimed filmmaker Gigi Gaston's ROOM 105 - a new musical show starring Grammy-nominated Sophie B. Hawkins - is a thoughtful and entertaining tribute to legendary soul singer Janis Joplin. The show is a humorous, engaging, bittersweet, intimate and honest musical confessional. Janis brings the audience into her world and her life, and teases viewers about aspects of modern day pop culture, of which she is privy. A modern-day retrospective on Joplin's turbulent life, telling a story that reveals the iconic singer's thoughts on love, sex, fame and belonging. The show will premiere on October 4, the very night of the anniversary of Janis Joplin's death, at the Macha Theatre-- blocks away from Barney's Beanery where she had her last drink before her untimely death, joining the infamous 27 club. BWW Reviews: Wilbury Group Lights Up the Stage with High-Energy DETROIT
by Robert Barossi - Sep 24, 2013

In terms of longevity and legacy, The Wilbury Group is still one of the newest kids on the block in the Rhode Island theater community. Founded only three years ago, in 2010, they have been growing quickly, moving last season into a new space where they have settled in very nicely. Along with finding their home as far as the physical space is concerned, they also have begun to find their groove, artistically and technically. If the first play of this season is any indication, they are ready for another big growth spurt and area audiences are in for some exciting, riveting works of theater. Detroit is a play that begins with a simple enough premise. A couple living in an upper middle-class suburb have invited their new neighbors over for a barbecue. The suburb could be just outside of the titular city or it could be anywhere in the United States. Middle-aged and seemingly well-off, the first couple are either the picture of suburban harmony or they are trying very hard to fake it. The other couple, younger and definitely lower in class, are just recently out of rehab and everything about them indicates a struggle and desire to make their lives work, if they can only figure out how. BWW Reviews: Bayou City Concert Musicals' ALONE TOGETHER: THE MUSIC OF ARTHUR SCHWARTZ is a Magically Enchanting Cabaret
by David Clarke - May 8, 2013

Paul Hope's Bayou City Concert Musicals (BCCM) is proudly continuing their mission of bringing to Houston the best of the best from show business' yesteryears. Sometimes it is in the form of a forgotten or neglected musical, like their concert stagings of ONE TOUCH OF VENUS, THE SECRET GARDEN, and FINNAN'S RAINBOW. At other events, Paul Hope stages a cabaret of a composer's hits and erstwhile gems. Last Monday, BCCM premiered their cabaret entitled Alone Together: THE SONGS OF ARTHUR SCHWARTZ. Arthur Schwartz composed for the Broadway productions THE BAND WAGON, A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, and others. He was also a celebrated Hollywood composer, writing music for THANK YOUR LUCKY STARS, the film adaptation of THE BAND WAGON, and others. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Nightmarish WOLVES Entertains at Celebration
by Don Grigware - Mar 19, 2013

The short and fast-moving Wolves, which comes in at about one hour, is a smart, scary, thrilling theatrical ride akin to a nightmare. What in the beginning upsets, though, sooner or later yields enlightenment and even an odd sense of relief. The whole bleak argument of the city as wilderness and man versus beast adds lyricism, and with this, the message of True West rings prophetic. You may find yourself thinking about what is happening, but, a word to the wise, don't think too hard; better to take it at face value and enjoy! (more...)

BWW Reviews: Language and Love Take Over The Gamm in Sparkling THE REAL THING
by Robert Barossi - Mar 19, 2013

Writers spend their entire careers, perhaps their entire lives, trying to find the right words. The perfect words. Those which will elevate their writing from something ordinary and dull to a lofty place among the great works of literary art. Some concepts, though, can't be so easily put into words. Cannot be defined or explained in any way that truly does them justice. Loves is one of those things and the attempt to put it into words is at the center of Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing, currently running at the Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre. (more...)
