West of Lenin is very excited to have José Amador return to WofL with his solo performance, El Hijo Prodigo, previously performed for a one night only special event in June 2012. Coming off a successful showcase at the Radial Theatre's Locally Grown Performance Festival we are happy to give El Hijo Prodigo a home this May.

EL HIJO PRODIGO (The Prodigal Son) tells the story of a man's return to his native Puerto Rico after an absence of 22 years. He is soon reunited with and beguiled by the history and culture of the island state he once called home. This five-day headlong rush into his ancestral community culminates with the chance for him to face his life, home and family and see them for what they really are. A journey through the island's music, mores, legends, people and traditions, EL HIJO PRODIGO brings to life the joys and sorrows of a Commonwealth barely 1100 miles from our shores.

Directed by Mark Fullerton and featuring José Amador.

From the Director: Fullerton claims that he approached El Hijo Prodigo in archetypal terms: "I thought of it as one man's search for home in a foreign land; a redemption of the soul through the penance of memory."

From the Playwright: Amador says his return home was a rich experience: "That trip ended up being something of a reminder of what life was like on the island; the number of ways I had changed; a flood of childhood memories battling for space in my head; the reintroduction to my home culture; and the many aspects of Puerto Rican history and legends that I'd forgotten in the interim."
