There was some fantastic variety on show at Edinburgh. There were definite disappointments but also some really impressive and innovative attempts.

Although it's always tough to pick just a few shows to mention - here are my awards for Edinburgh 2013:

Best Play: BALLAD OF THE BURNING STAR
An inventive personal political piece. A combination of music, dance, physical theatre and drama that builds to a gripping conclusion.

Best Comedy: FOUR SCREWS LOOSE
This musical comedy sketch troupe had the audience on their feeT. Fast-paced, cheeky and well performed, these are guys that are likely to go far. With a combination of Les Miserables parodies and a Disney finale, how could they go wrong?

Best Actor: Ben Newman, HIGH PLAINS (A WESTERN MYTH)
Newman's mesmerising performance in this one man show was superb. He shifted gears effortlessly in this ghostly tale of brothers and secrets.

Best Actress: Johanna Nutter, MY PREGNANT BROTHER
Nutter was charming with a smile and demeanour that was infectious. This charm made the darker parts of her story all the more shocking.

One To Watch: BRIEFS
This outrageous Australian circus cabaret deserve a big audience. Magic Mike meets Cirque du Soleil. These will become an Edinburgh staple, if only for inventive use of a Rubik's cube and a banana.
