Fartlek, or Der Froschmauskrieg

Fartlek is an epic, hilarious tale of Canadian teenagers obsessed with a made-up sport called Knattleikr. As play unfolds, wills are tested, coalitions are formed, noses are broken, and we question what it means to grow up and make peace with ourselves and each other.

The writers

David Haan is a gargantuan quasi-Canadian playwright and competitive speller.  His plays range from one line (Quickly!  To The Dirigible!, first performed at Spoke The Hub in 2010) to 42-part sagas (The President Plays, first performed in Ars Nova's ANT Fest 2013) and are all epic regardless of size.  He is a regular contributor to Amios's monthly new play program, SHOTZ!, where you can often find him on the first Monday of the month.  He is a graduate of Wesleyan University (2006), and the most difficult word he has spelled in competition is "uintjie" (2012).

Liz Morgan is a playwright, poet and performer.  She is thrilled to be returning to the Amios First Draughts reading series to expand her short play, Motherland (The Melting Shotz).  Liz graduated from the Brown/Trinity Rep MFA Acting Program where she was the recipient of the Davis Wickham Prize for Excellence in Playwriting. As a resident artist with Amios, her writing credits include Projection (Shotz to the Future), which was nominated as a finalist in the New York New Works Theatre Festival and Breaking & Entering (Shotz for Justice, First Draughts)which was recently announced as a semi-finalist in the New Works Lab at Stratford.  Liz is an alum of the INKtank Lab with Rising Circle where she presented The Clark Doll at the 2016 PlayRISE Festival.  She is currently developing works-in-progress with the Create Dangerously Writers' Workshop at JACK and The Fire This Time Festival Writers' Group.  Her plays have been developed at the POTPOURRI! World Women Works Series, Rites and Reason Theatre and Manhattan Rep.  Liz was recently named a finalist for the I AM SOUL Playwrights Residency at the National Black Theatre where her playwriting will be featured in their Keep Soul Alive Reading Series.  She is also slated to present some of her writing at Judson Art Wednesdays Magic Time series in 2017. Her satirical one-act, A Matter of Taste is published in the Long Island City One Act Festival Anthology.  Her poetry has been featured on The Huffington Post and the Medium publication, Athena Talks.  Liz’s acting credits include film and a lot of new stage work.  She currently works as a facilitator and teaching artist in NYC.  www.LizMorganOnline.com

Justin Robert Yorio is a founding company member, frequent actor, writer, and director, and the current Artistic Director with Amios, for whom he's written over a dozen SHOTZ! plays, in addition to a one-act. This Is Where You Are (a Play in 3 Parts and 3 Stories), Part One: I Never Said Hello So I’ll Say Goodbye, is being developed as part of Amios’ First Draughts series, and will mark first full-length. A proud alumnus of Cornell University and the National Theatre Conservatory, his name is an anagram of, “join our story tribe.”

David Rosen has been working with SHOTZ! since the July 2011 show. He’s written 30 plays, directed 14 more, and has produced 6 times. He’s honored to be serving Amios as SHOTZ! Program Director, helping to guide the current season and shape the SHOTZ! program going forward. In addition, he will present his first full-length play as part of Amios’s First Draughts series. David is a psychologist and statistics professor by training, and during the day he manages credit risk for an online lending company.
